PROJECT PROFILE

SYSCO BELFAST

COORDINATION OF LARGE-SCALE AGGREGATE SUPPLY AND SURFACING WORKS WITHIN A FAST-MOVING ENVIRONMENT WAS SUCCESSFULLY MANAGED BY MCQUILLAN COMPANIES THROUGH METICULOUS PLANNING… SURFACING & AGGREGATES

McQuillan Companies was delighted to assist Heron Bros in the successful delivery of the Sysco project. John McQuillan Contracts was awarded a bituminous surfacing package, which involved the supply and lay of an AC 20 dense binder course and stone mastic asphalt surface course to internal pavements, and AC 20 dense binder and AC 6 dense surface course to internal footways. Externally, John McQuillan Contracts completed a 200mm overall depth new road construction, comprising AC 32 dense base, AC 20 dense binder and hot rolled asphalt with pre-coated chippings. All materials were installed by its highly- trained operatives using state-of-the-art paving equipment. Works were delivered under its CE Mark accreditation, HAPAS approval and National Highways Sector Scheme 16 certification. McQuillan Quarries supplied

approximately 75,000 tonnes of high- quality aggregates for various fill areas and the new construction sub-base. The materials were processed at McQuillan Companies’ Budore Quarry, located just three miles from the project site, and produced in compliance with CE Mark certification and Factory Production Control standards. David Oakes, Contracts Manager, said, “One of the key challenges was the coordination of large-scale aggregate supply and surfacing works within a fast- moving, multi-contractor environment. This was successfully managed through close collaboration with Heron Bros, meticulous planning, and the alignment of plant, materials and skilled labour at each stage of the programme.” All aggregates and pavement installations were delivered within the required main contractor’s project programme, while innovations included

the use of recycled asphalt products in base and binder layers, significantly reducing the need for virgin materials. “Given the substantial volume of materials required, our logistics strategy included the deployment of up to 12 lorries for deliveries to ensure uninterrupted supply to the site,” said David. “During the early stages of the project, this allowed us to deliver over 2,000 tonnes daily. Additionally, all delivery vehicles were fuelled using Dipetane, a fuel treatment that enhances combustion efficiency and reduces emissions, further supporting our environmental targets. “Our high-capacity quarry production, modern paving fleet, and real-time project tracking tools also played a crucial role in ensuring quality and adaptability throughout the project lifecycle.”
