HELD AT UU’S BELFAST CAMPUS ON APRIL 3, THE EVENT SAW 14 TEAMS COMPETE IN NOVICE AND PREVIOUS ENTRANT CATEGORIES TO ANSWER HEALTH AND SAFETY-RELATED QUESTIONS… Northern Ireland Safety Group hosts its 2025 quiz
Fourteen teams have competed for the top spots in the Novice and Previous Entrant categories of the 2025 Northern Ireland Safety Group (NISG) Quiz. Held in the Ulster University Belfast Campus on April 3, the event was sponsored by Safety Advice Centre and UU. Itfeatured eight rounds of pub quiz- style health and safety-related questions with a few general knowledge questions, thrown in for good measure. H&S professionals and anyone in a full- time H&S role are not eligible to sit on a team, with the aim being to encourage all employees to take ownership of health and safety at work. This year’s quiz ended up with tie breakers for the top spots in both the Novice and Previous Entrants categories. Opening the event, HSENI Deputy Chief Inspector Dr Bryan Monson addressed the room and thanked everyone for attending, wishing them good luck for the competition. Alan Burch from Safety Advice Centre took on the role of Quizmaster in his 20th annual quiz, excluding 2021 when
the event could not take place due to Covid. He ensured the rules were followed and kept the quiz on time during the evening. A delicious hot buffet supper was provided for everyone afterwards. This year’s raffle charity was selected as Parkinson’s UK and, with nine local support groups in the province, the organisation provides friendship, support and accessible local resources helping those with Parkinson’s to live well with the condition. Emma McNeill, Community Fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK, provided details of the vital work undertaken by the charity. Every year another 1,500 people will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s across the UK and around 4,200 people currently have a diagnosis of Parkinson’s in Northern Ireland. The charity provides self-management courses online to help people with Parkinson’s and their carers, to increase resilience and knowledge about the challenges that the illness brings. They also work with the five local health trusts to educate and train health and care
professionals and improve the level of care they can offer. With £880 collected on the night, NISG Executive Committee Member Jim Donnelly from JMD Training rounded up the total to £1,000, which will be used to further the charity’s activities within Northern Ireland. A formal presentation of the funds raised will be made at an NISG Group Meeting in the coming months.
