On 19 October 1979, the largest, most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded propelled 5,500 gallons of gasoline into corrugated steel huts filled with U.S. Marines. The gas ignited, injuring seventy-three people, thirteen of them fatally. The Marine Corps commandant, a veteran of combat in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, was stunned as he met scores of horribly burned survivors. “Having witnessed a lot of bad things, ugly things,” the general declared, “none can compare to that experience.” And yet this 1979 catastrophe on the slopes of Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji remains all but forgotten except by those directly affected. GOLF Don’t miss out on a great experience competing against other country clubs and playing a variety of local courses. You are eligible to join the league if you are 50 or older, whether or not you have already retired. ANCC fields two separate teams which are very competitive in league play -- one at Arlington and one at Fairfax. Both teams are always looking for new players who like competitive golf. Each team will play 10 or 12 other teams both home and away for a season which runs from early April through early October. Play is on Thursday mornings and is four-ball match play with a three-point Nassau, combined with a sweepstakes competition. We use handicaps in all matches. Our team members have handicap indexes ranging from the single digits through the mid-thirties, and foursomes are assigned with a view to having like handicaps play together. As a team member, you will be assigned to play in at least a third of our matches during the season and may volunteer to play any other matches as well. 2026 Northern Virginia Retired Men’s Golf Association (NVRMGA)
At each match, the home club provides practice balls and waives green fees. The home club also provides morning pastries, coffee, and a buffet lunch afterwards. The 2026 Army-Navy teams will be put together within the next few months, and eligible ANCC members can sign up for either team. Signups are open from now until 31 January for the Arlington Team and until 1 March for the Fairfax Team. For signup instructions and more information, visit the teams’ web pages. They can be found on the ANCC web site under Golf, ANCC Golf Organizations & Teams, Men’s Groups. Sign up as soon as possible! 2026 ANCC Men’s “B” Team & Qualifying Dates
The ANCC Men’s “B” Team competition begins late April and is a great way to meet other ANCC members and play competitive golf against other clubs in the area. The ‘B’ Team is open to all men with course handicaps ranging from 4 to 14. Matches are held on Saturdays and/or Sundays from mid-April thru late July (8 matches total) with playoffs held from August thru October. Signups for both tryout dates begin 1 February 2026. Although you do not need to compete in both tryout dates (we take the best score from either round), however, it is recommended to try to compete in both as to increase your chances of making the team. Tryouts will be held on Sunday, 15 March at Arlington, and on Saturday, 21 March at Fairfax. I have checked the local school spring break calendars as to limit conflicts in scheduling and made sure nobody will miss any Masters action as well! For more ANCC ‘B’ Team information click here or contact Tom Gwilliam at thomasgwilliam@yahoo.com . 2026 Try Out Dates (tee times starting at/around 1200): Click here to register for 15 March 2026 at Arlington Click here to register for 21 March 2026 at Fairfax The Senior Men’s Golf Organization (SMGO) invites all ANCC members aged 50 and over to participate in our men’s senior golf program in 2026. This is organized play that develops new friendships and enhances your enjoyment of the game of golf and Club facilities. The SMGO program features an ABCD scramble at 8:30 AM typically on the first and third Wednesday of each month, at the Arlington course, commencing in April and continuing through October. Other scrambles may be scheduled during the season when play dates are available. All ANCC members are welcome regardless of their handicap. If you were a member in 2025, your membership will automatically be renewed for 2026. A sign-up list for new members to the SMGO will be posted in the Arlington Golf Shop. If you do not want to participate in 2026, please indicate your decision to be deleted on the sign-up sheet at the ARL New members who may be leaving the area for the winter are encouraged to sign up prior to departing. The 2026 dues, expected to be $110 for the season, will be set prior to the opening of the season. Dues cover the cost of lunch in the Clubhouse at the completion of each of the 16 ABCD Scrambles...best lunch deal in town!! Standard cart fees are charged for each event in which a member participates. A $10.00 entry fee for the prize pool and the cost of coffee and pastries, available before each ABCD Scramble, is collected at check-in prior to the 8:30 AM shotgun tee off. RACQUET SPORTS INDOOR WINTER TENNIS TIPS (QUICK HITS) Even though we’re indoors, winter tennis still places extra demands on your body. A few smart habits can help you feel better on court and play your best during the indoor season. Warm up before you hit Muscles are tighter in the winter months, even indoors, so taking time to warm up is key. Our warm-up and stretching area is a great place to get ready before play. A few minutes on the bike, dynamic stretching, or light band work can make a big difference, especially before serving. Start slow Use the first few minutes on court to rally at an easy pace and gradually build intensity. Focus on footwork and timing before going full speed. Take advantage of indoor conditions Indoor courts are ideal for working on your timing, serve and return, and net play. Use this time to groove your strokes so you get the most out of the indoor season and are ready when outdoor season arrives. Don’t skip the cool-down Stretching after play, especially in the new warm-up area, can help reduce stiffness and soreness later in the day or the next morning. Listen to your body Winter tennis often comes with lingering tightness. If something doesn’t feel right, take a break or stop, staying healthy now means more court time later. Indoor season is the perfect opportunity to build a strong foundation, stay injury-free, and be fully ready when we transition outdoors.
