Update From Our Executive Director

Winter House is Back And we ’ ve made a few changes ! This year ’ s Winter House will have more programming , especially for children . There ’ s not enough room to list all the fun activities we ’ ll be offering , and some require early registration with payment so be on the lookout for the Winter House schedule soon ! Try out some of our most popular programs , including Throwing on the Wheel , Raku Firing , and Blacksmithing . Additionally , there will be some fun seasonal workshops like Candle Making , Floral Design , Glass Etching , Ornament Making , and even Yoga ! Some of these workshops fill up early so don ’ t hesitate to register in advance . Other paid activities include photos with Santa ( furry friends are welcome - check our calendar to see when ), s ’ more - making , craft classes , and ornament decorating . Free activities include select evening piano concerts in the Great Hall , classic board games , children ’ s story time , and exploring the mansion . These are all great group activities to celebrate special occasions ! The Library will transform into a cozy wine bar and the Winter Living Room will be filled with seating so families and friends can get comfortable by the fire . Beverages and snacks will be for sale - including hot chocolate , beer , wine , and s ’ more kits ! Some evenings will feature a jazz pianist performing in the Great Hall , and December 2nd will feature a holiday - themed performance by Joe Gransden . On December 9th and 10th , our very own dancers will put on an amazing must - see show ! Callanwolde ’ s grand , historic fireplaces will be lit inside the house , and outside you ’ ll find fire pits waiting for marshmallows to be roasted ! The entire gallery will feature our Artist Market , filled with handmade pottery , jewelry , and artwork for purchase , all created by talented Callanwolde artists . The mansion will be open November 25th & 26th , November 30th - December 2nd , and December 7th - 10th . Just like last year , admission is free and guests are welcome to explore and enjoy all the beautiful decorations in the mansion . We hope you will find time to join us for this new holiday tradition .

To provide the Atlanta community with premier , accessible arts education , especially to the underserved , while promoting enjoyment of the arts at the historic and inspiring Callanwolde estate . Callanwolde's Mission Student Financial Aid Callanwolde Financial Aid is available for all children and adult programming at Callanwolde and is awarded to students based on financial need and / or merit . Callanwolde is also able to provide financial aid to those with disabilities due to the Frank Barham Fund .

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE Please visit www . callanwolde . org to register for courses . Registrations are accepted in the Callanwolde Administrative Offices between 9 : 00am – 5 : 00pm , Monday through Friday . Late registration is available for some classes with department approval . CANCELLATIONS Callanwolde Fine Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment . Full refunds are issued for canceled classes . We make every effort to notify students of postponements and cancellations at least 24 hours before the first scheduled session . New Student Orientation Are you new to Callanwolde and considering taking a class for the very first time ? Do you have questions like : Where should I park ? Where is my class held ? Where are the bathrooms ? These questions and more will be answered in the new student orientation . We will give you all the information you need to know about taking classes . The orientation will include a walking tour of the House and grounds and is open to everyone , new and returning students alike . There is no charge , but we do ask participants to sign up . Students are encouraged to only enroll in classes that work with their schedules . Students who are successfully enrolled in a class will be removed from waitlists of classes in the same department . Once a waitlisted student accepts a spot in a class , the student will be removed from all waitlists from other classes in the same department . Open spots will be offered to students in the order they appear on the waitlist . Refunds or transfers are not available once your class begins .

Using traditional hand hammered blacksmithing techniques over a coal burning forge students will forge a selection of heads and figures of animals and mythical beasts . The selection of projects includes : cats , dogs , owls , horses , rams , dragons , and wizards . Additional projects available as time permits and for continuing students . Materials will be discussed in the first class ; fuel for the student ’ s forge as well as steel for planned projects are provided by the studio . Students will need to wear 100 % natural non - flammable fibers ( cotton or wool ). No synthetic fibers or blends . Long sleeve shirts and pants that cover tops of footwear . Footwear must be leather or cotton canvas shoes that fully enclose feet . Additional materials for repeat or custom projects can be purchased from the instructor at cost . About the Instructor : Garrett lives in Decatur and is a member of ABANA and the Alex Bealer Blacksmith Association of Georgia . How to write a compelling memoir in 8 weeks . This class is designed for individuals who are interested in exploring their ideas and turning them into a memoir . We will break down the many different types of memoirs and teach how to make your Journal Entries into an outline with the end goal of creating your memoir . We will also provide guidance for those wanting to write about past experiences .

If you have aspirations of becoming a writer or are already on your writing journey , this course is designed to help you discover , enhance and / or bolster your inner writer voice and add yet another tool to your arsenal in getting your stories out . Each week , you will be tasked to write a story from the heart as you ’ ll get to choose from an array of different subjects and prompt ideas . Each student will participate in each class , whether with a written story or feedback for those reading what they ’ ve written . It will be loads of fun as we paint pictures with words and see the world through each other ’ s voices .

Four intensive meetings to help poets discover the poems only they can write . This class offers children a basis in both ballet and tap . 20 minutes of primary ballet ( basic positions , body awareness , imagination based moving ) followed by 20 minutes of tap ( flaps , claps , stomps , enriching rhythms ). Students need both ballet and tap shoes and dance attire ( leotards and tights ).

Creative Movement is a joyful blend of movement exploration , socialization , imaginative play and skill building in dance . Dancers should arrive in dance or yoga attire and ballet shoes .

In this one - day workshop , we will explore different ways to manipulate wax and the tools needed to achieve your vision . Bring your ideas and an open mind to learn a new way of creating jewelry . Wax and tools will be provided by the studio , so you won ' t need to bring anything to get started . A supply list will be provided before the workshop , if you wish to shop for your own supplies . We will not be casting in this workshop , but we will discuss resources and next steps for casting your creations .

This class is designed for self - directed students with previous experience in intermediate / advanced technical skills . Continuing intermediate and advanced students that wish to expand their design and fabrication techniques will work on independent projects with instructor input and one - on - one guidance . Demos and design discussions will be ongoing .

This course is for beginners with no prior experience in a metals studio . It will focus on introducing fundamental fabrication skills such as sawing , filing , texturing , shaping , polishing and basic stone setting . You will learn studio safety , how to determine the order of construction , as well as the proper and safe use of tools and equipment . You will also learn to become comfortable with using a flex shaft and an acetylene torch . Our fully stocked studio provides all the tools necessary . SANDCASTING WORKSHOP

Sandcasting is a fast way to cast simple objects in metal . In this small group workshop , you will learn how to pack the flask and melt and pour the metal to complete the cast . Because it ’ s a small group , you will be able to cast a few times . The materials fee includes the sand and gas needed . You will need to provide some things to mold and your choice of sterling silver or brass for casting .

Students will learn traditional metalsmithing techniques like piercing , soldering , forming , texturing , and bezel setting to create jewelry of their own design or an assigned project . Emphasis will be placed on proper use of tools and materials to create a beautiful , well crafted , and comfortable jewelry item that will last years of wear . THE BASICS AND BEYOND : JEWELRY MAKING AND METALSMITHING

This course will continue the focus on basic fabrication techniques , help students solidify their skills , and begin to develop their own design ideas . Students will work on advancing their fabrication skills as required by more complex instructor guided projects which may include , but will not be limited to additional methods of stone setting , clasps , hinges , cold connections such as rivets , and chain - making . Problem solving , construction , and craftsmanship are strongly emphasized in this mixed level class . Good for students who enjoy being inspired by people of varying levels of skill and experience . Material requirements and cost will be discussed in the first class ( approximately $ 40 ).
