FINISHING SHOTS MACHO DOES NOT PROVE MUCHO: On March 6, 1989, former lightweight titleholder Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini returned from a four- year layoff to face colorful two-weight world champion Hector “Macho” Camacho. The inaugural WBO junior welterweight title would be at stake. Camacho’s jab was effective throughout the first half of the fight, while Mancini struggled with his own distance and timing. Late in the bout, Camacho was content to smash and grab, much to the chagrin of the 11,517 fans at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada. At the end of 12 rounds, Camacho was the winner by split decision.
