H ow does this benefit you - our customers? You will have confidence that we have grown these varieties and have selected the best ones for your production. With over 500 varieties trialled each year by the innovating team, there is no question they are working to give you the best selections. We trial for the breeders to establish connections and form working relationships with them. This allows them to see how their mums perform in different regions around the country and gives us a working knowledge of what is coming down the pipeline. In general we trial mums to see which ones we want to move forward with and offer them to our customers. By the innovating department working on these trials it has established a working blueprint for them when they do move into production, we have the knowledge of how they grew and how to make them a successful crop for our customers. W hat is a plant trial? In biology a plant trial is a controlled experiment where different plant varieties or treatments are grown under specific conditions to evaluate their performance, typically comparing characteristics like growth rate, disease resistance, yield or aesthetic qualities, with the goal of identifying the best performing plant for a particular purpose or environment; essentially, it's a method to test and compare different plant cultivars under controlled conditions to assess their suitability for the various applications. W ho is Melissa? Melissa worked on her
undergraduate studies at Aquinas College and then went on to earn her Masters in Plant Breeding Genetics and Biotechnology from Michigan State University. She joined Mast Young Plants back in the spring of 2022. Mel says she enjoys getting to see the new varieties coming out from the breeders before the general public and likes having a hand in their success. Plus being surround by flowers year round is a nice touch as well.
