Retail sales declined by 16.4 percent in April, as grocery store sales dropped 13.3 percent, gen- eral stores sales dropped by 20.8 percent, and restaurant sales declined by 29.5 percent. Only online sales posted a monthly sales increase (8.4 percent) as quarantines forced more purchases to be made online, a trend not likely to fully reverse itself after the pandemic passes.” AF&PA Releases April 2020 Containerboard Report AF&PA reported that total containerboard production in April increased seven percent compared to April 2019. It was up seven percent when compared to the same four months of 2019. April 2020 production of container- board for export increased 29 percent compared to the same month last year; it was up 41 percent year-to-date. The containerboard operating rate was 95.9 percent, up 5.2 points from April 2019 and up 5.6 points year-to-date. Mill inventories of containerboard at the end of April de- creased 19,000 short tons from the previous month and were up 28,000 short tons compared to April 2019.
