Indeed, the incentive of protected profits and market power - as opposed to a survival of the fittest competition incentive - seeks to reward innovation. This is essential in almost all industries because it enables significant amounts of research and development spending, without endangering profits. Therefore, in my

opinion, intellectual property rights are necessary evils which foster our progress. Whilst the monopoly incentive contains elements of ÂevilÊ in that it creates inefficiencies and barriers to entry, it is definitely necessary in order to promote innovation, encourage creativity, and foster progress in our society.
