LorcaÊs death, and the deep sense of betrayal that Lorca was betrayed at the hands of his fellow Andalucians. Neruda, in ÂExplico Algunas CosasÊ, expresses his bitter grief when he ponders life before LorcaÊs death and asks Âte acuerdas debajo la tierra?Ê In a similar fashion to Machado, the anaphoric repetition of Âte acuerdasÊ combined with the use of polysyndeton show that Neruda is overwhelmed with emotion and memories. The impact on his poetry is shown when he poses:

Preguntaréis por qué su poesía no nos habla del sueños, de las hojas, de los grandes volcanes de su país natal?

This question is answered when he commands the reader to ÂVenid a ver la sangre por las calles!Ê Neruda does not feel able to write about such topics, as he feels scarred by the death of Lorca and the wider suffering at the hands of the Nationalists. In Confieso que he vivido , Neruda sums up this impact when he states that Âla guerra de España, que cambió mi poesía, comenzó para mí con la desaparición de un poeta.Ê Hurtado observed that Lorca Â[sigue] viviendo intensamente vivoÊ 2 , through the poetry of his contemporaries. The impact of Lorca upon their poetry is hugely influential upon opinions of the Spanish Civil War, acting as the focal point of political poetry to highlight and display disgust at the wider brutality and devastation of Nationalist forces. Within the microcosm of literary figures, his death was a tragic loss with profound effects upon the lives of key poets, and consequently the poetry they produced during the conflict and beyond.
