THE BLOOD LINES OF BRONCO BLUE

A Family History of Boise State Football

Bronco Blue doesn’t just run in our veins or serve as a Heffner family tradition. If there were ever a Heffner family crest, you’d see a picture of Buster Bronco smack dab in the middle. My father played football at Boise State in 1957 for Coach Lyle Smith, back when the field was green. I took the field in 1987 — the first year of the blue turf — and my son is a redshirt junior linebacker today. To my knowledge, we are the only three-generation football family in Boise State history, and we’re insanely proud of that. Growing up as a local kid who graduated from Bishop Kelly, I can genuinely say that this success couldn’t have been predicted. Sure the foundation had been laid by guys like Pokey Allen and Dirk Koetter, but when you look at our “Boise State has never been an elitist status symbol. It’s been a place of the people, where hardworking families send their kids to learn.” consistent progress, the level at which we’re competing is still unfathomable. I’ll never forget a precise moment in my life that illustrates this idea. My wife’s dad played football at Oklahoma, so my son grew up loving both Boise State and Oklahoma. One day he asked me, “Dad, do you think the Broncos will ever play the Sooners?” We just laughed. Five years later, the Fiesta Bowl happened, and the landscape of college football changed forever.

When I was playing, the equivalent to this would’ve been playing on national television. Preoccupied with beating the Vandals and trying to win in Division 1-AA, the thought of opening a season in prime time on a major network wasn’t even comprehendible. Now, the Vandals are in the Big Sky Conference, and Boise State is the darling of college football. I don’t have ill feelings toward the Vandals, but after the experiences I had playing there, and the way both the programs have

gone, I’m not disappointed to play them anymore. It was a great local rivalry in its time, but college football has a way of moving on, and so should we. Football is moving in an interesting direction now, and the Broncos are at the center of it. I see great opportunities ahead for Boise State, but we’ll have to navigate the same tricky waters as the rest of the

teams. There’s a lot of disparity in the game and even more money. I never used to be a fan of paying players, but as a parent, you see your son take the field in a sport where nothing is guaranteed, all the while networks and schools are making millions of dollars off of his and his teammate’s efforts. These aspects have a way of changing your perspective. Even if players do get paid, I don’t see the character of the program ever changing. A little- known fact about this year’s uniforms is that on the inside of the collar, embroidered so only the players can see, reads “Blue Collar.” We’re a program that wins, but we win because of the heart that our team plays with. Boise State has never been an elitist status symbol. It’s been a place of the people, where hardworking families send their kids to learn. If you ever see a picture of the 1980 National Championship team, you’ll know what I mean. “Blue Collar” may be a bit of pun, but I guarantee you, for the 35,000 people that fill Bronco Stadium to watch, and the 105 players that take Lyle Smith Field on a Saturday, it’s a source of pride. And that’s what college football is all about.

The Monsters Some Believe Are Real

3 of the Weirdest Cryptids in Pseudoscientific History

There are people who would have you believe that monsters live among us all year long. These individuals, referred to as cryptozoologists (or just “wishful thinkers” by their skeptics), believe a hidden animal kingdom exists just beyond the edge of mainstream biological science. Here are three of the weirdest, almost-certainly imaginary “cryptids” to ever capture the human imagination. THE JERSEY DEVIL According to legend, the 1.1 million-acre Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey are home to more than just birds and deer. The story goes that when one Jane Leeds gave birth to her 13th child, she was dismayed to add yet another kid to her responsibilities. She cried out, “Oh, let this one be the devil!” Shortly after the child was born, the boy was transmogrified into a twisted creature with the malformed head of a goat, leathery wings, and a thrashing, forked tail. After slicing the midwife with its ragged claws, the beast

flew up the chimney and fled into the trees. Hundreds of years later, the beast is still said to creep the backwoods on its cloven hooves, glowering from the blackness with shining, red eyes.

THE BUNYIP When European settlers began edging into the territory of Aboriginal Australians, they heard whispered, frightened tales of a man-eating “water spirit” that lived in the lakes and rivers of the area. Descriptions of the creature varied wildly. The monster was alternately described as an

enormous starfish, an alligator-like creature with the head of an emu, or a massive bulldog-faced beast. But accounts held one thing in common: The monster claimed the lives of any who dared camp near its watery domain. THE LOVELAND FROG One night, near Loveland, Ohio, a man reportedly beheld a trio of bipedal frog-people slapping their webbed feet along the side of the road. If that wasn’t enough, one even had a magic wand, which shot sparks as the man ran off. Apparently, not all mythical beasts are bloodthirsty monsters; some are a little more Kermit than Cthulhu.

State Lines Can't Contain Realty ONE's Service

Whenever you’re looking to buy in a new area, there’s always a degree of hesitancy involved. What neighborhood should you live in? Are there lifestyle requirements your new home should meet? How will the cost of living change? All of these fears can add up quickly, but thanks to the Realty ONE Group network of agents, both the sale of our home out-of-state and the purchase of our new home here in Boise went smoothly. We approached our Realty ONE Group listing agent in California to find a quality person to work with in Boise, and she immediately went to work finding someone who could take care of us. After doing research, she referred us to Joel at Realty ONE Group Professionals here in Boise, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Joel is personable and welcoming, but he’s also been extremely resourceful as well. We’ve needed painters, contractors, and a lot of guidance, and he has been there every step of the way. When we started this process months ago, Joel was gracious enough to do video conferences with us to ease our stress. We’ve already started referring Joel to other clients — my parents! Joel and our agent back in California did such fantastic work for us that they are both managing my parent’s transactions as well. My

parents arrived in Boise and loved working with Joel just as much as we did. Realty ONE Group has been excellent across two states, and I have no doubt Joel and his team will take care of you as well. Now we can enjoy the beautiful fall weather, go on evening walks in our new neighborhood in Eagle, and enjoy the freedoms Idaho has to offer. We’re very thankful for our new home and fortunate to have such amazing people to help with our most significant financial asset. – Kurt Knutson

BSU TRIVIA

Tailgating at Its Finest 5 Tailgates So Good You Might Miss the Game

1. Bronco legends Jay Ajayi and Ian Johnson both share the record for rushing touchdowns in a single game (5) with this lesser known Bronco.

2. Kellen Moore’s 43 touchdowns in 2011 is tied for first in Bronco history. Who is he tied with?

3. Who did Boise State play when they set the Albertsons Stadium attendance record of 36,864?

4. What was the name of the famous 2-point conversion play that gave Boise State their first Fiesta Bowl victory?

5. The Broncos and Vandals played 40 games over their historic rivalry. What is the record in games played between the schools, and who leads? ANSWERS

There’s a slight buzz in the air as you walk through the parking lot. Your ears embrace the sounds of cheering and conversation. Smells of recipes that took years to perfect fill your nostrils as you navigate through a sea of tents and pickup trucks. Friends and family wait at your destination with a cold beverage. The crowds of people all sport the colors of the home team as you finally arrive for what you’ve waited for all week: game day. Tailgating is a college football tradition unlike any other. Schools across the country will claim to have the best, but few can back it up. Here are five universities that can talk the talk and walk the walk. 1. UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN Go blue! The tailgate in Ann Arbor is truly something to behold. “The Big House” parking lot opens at 7 a.m., and from then on, it’s all party, all the time. With one of college football’s biggest stadiums, it’s only natural that the tailgate follows suit. 2. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN Walleye, cheese curds, and brats are just the beginning at Camp Randall. Wisconsin has great tailgating at the stadium, but the local hotspots of the surrounding area are even better places to show your Badger pride. If you can’t get into the arena to jump around in the fourth quarter, you can still join the tradition anywhere in Madison where there’s red and white. 3. LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY Geaux Tigers! LSU’s tailgate is something to be revered across the country because of its food options. While the jambalaya and barbecue are utterly fantastic, Tiger fans whip up something else when the University of Florida comes to town: alligator. 4. UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON The Huskies have a different take on tailgating than almost any other university in the country. While most schools gather in parking lots, Washington fans are out in the water. That’s right — this “tailgate” is known for the boats that pull into Union Bay right outside the stadium. 5. UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI On game day, the Grove at Ole Miss transforms from a serene 10-acre park with mature trees to a scene unlike any other. Tens of thousands of fans gather in their red, white, and blue to prepare for the Walk of Champions, where the entire team strolls through the tailgate on their way to the stadium. It’s 35 years of tradition that contributes something special to the scene.

The 5 Best College Football Tailgates Cop Lip-Sync Challenges Go Viral

Check Out These Lip-Sync Challenges Across the U.S. Police Officers Sing Their Hearts Out

When you think of viral videos of police officers, you may not imagine your local police department lip-syncing pop songs. But this new online trend is taking the internet by storm. To show a more positive side of their departments, many stations all over the country have participated in a lip-sync challenge. While these challenges were created to make viewers laugh, their driving purpose was to create a connection between officers and their communities. They hope to remind civilians that behind every badge is a person who isn’t all that different from you. The challenge started when Alexander Mena, a deputy in the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in Texas, posted a video of himself lip-syncing “Fuiste Mala” by the Kumbia Kings on June 19 of this year. His video, which gained over 1.5 million views, encouraged other officers to follow suit. Mena, a recruiting-team deputy with Bexar County for three years, has been making lip-sync videos since he downloaded Snapchat on his phone. The day he recorded this particular video, he sent it to his sergeant, who passed it along to the officers who handle social media for their office. Then it went viral.

Several of the other individual officers responded with their own videos of mainstream hits like ‘N Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye” and One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” The popularity of these initial challenges inspired other stations to create their own videos featuring entire departments singing and dancing in unison. Some of the videos with the most views are the Norfolk Police Department lip-syncing Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” the Apple Valley Police Department lip-syncing The Tokens’ “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” and the San Francisco Police Department lip-syncing Too Short’s “Blow the Whistle.” Keep checking your social media to see who gets challenged next!
