Victor was asked to preview it on his own before it appeared on the local big screen. When the idea of IMAX, the high-resolution 70mm film process shown on seven-story screens was being considered for London, Victor was a big proponent in finally bringing it here. Digital movie-making took over the industry in 2012. Victor refers to it as a “copycat of celluloid film”. He goes on to express that the high quality of digital is profound, but in his own words, there is “less resolution; with regular film being brighter with more accurate colours, more detail, and better definition”. He would know. Even with his decades of cinema experience behind the projector, Victor continues to clean up the theatre after a performance, work concession, and change the lobby posters. In an industry which is struggling against television streaming, this kind of dedication is necessary. And how has ‘streaming’ or ‘video on demand’ affected movie audiences? When the streaming service Netflix began in 2007, it swept up legions of movie fans who could now enjoy watching movies in the comfort of their home. Other streaming services sprung up to reap in-home audiences. During the pandemic, one would think this mass exodus from theatres would continue but according to Victor, subscriptions to the various services did reach a plateau. He states that it was from the lack of “theatricals”, such as advertising and promotional movie trailers which would really sell a film to the public. Home movie audiences seemed to be hesitant to watch a film which they knew nothing about.
Post-pandemic, Victor believes people are anxious to get back into theatres. He adds that young moviegoers who found such titles as Terminator 2 and the Star Wars franchise online, now want to see it on the big screen. The Hyland Cinema has reached its 20th year of offering London the best in international and art house cinema in a landmark theatre. It was a struggle early on and much more of one during the recent pandemic years. Owners Moira and Ali Adlan are to be praised for continuing to offer this city the best in art house, classic, and international film. A good part of the success has been the work and dedication of Victor Liorentas. So the next time you are anticipating the opening credits of a film at the Hyland, take a glance over your shoulder into the projector light and maybe you will get a glimpse of the man who makes it happen. www.hylandcinema.com
