Wortley Villager September 2024

Wortley Jazz and Blues Festival 2024 by J. Bruce Parker It was touch and go for a while, but amidst the on and off downpours of rain on the morning of August 18th, the 11th edition of the Wortley Jazz and Blues Festival did get under way at 2 pm. Co-organizer and musician Chris Murphy tells me, “We did get down to the wire to shut it down but we did pull it off”. And they did and the sun did shine, much like the six bands which performed on the closed section of Wortley Road between Craig and Bruce Streets. Chris estimated that a crowd of 2400 did show up to experience the wonderful musical vibe these bands did provide.

Top to bottom, left to right: Baddest Big Band, Benoit, Joel Dupuis Band, London songstresses Hilary Welch, Denise Pelley, and Rachelle Courtney with Nevin Campbell Quartet, Soul Sausage, The Jitterburgs, Tony Daynisveld and Malinda Imrie cuttin’ the rug, Co-organizer Marty Verweel, Margaret Hopkins (second from right) and volunteers.
