Wortley Villager September 2024

Meet Your Old South Neighbour – Nancy Clarke by Katherine Krige Nancy Clarke first lived in London from 1985 to 1988 when she attended Fanshawe College to obtain her Fine Art Diploma. At the time, she was unfamiliar with Wortley Village, but fast forward several years to 2008 and our quaint village swung into her radar — close friends were relocating here. She and her husband found a lovely home tucked into a quiet street on the edge of Old South and fell in love. She never looked back. Not only was Wortley Village a great place to raise a family, including a house full of animals, but Nancy carved out a private studio in her home where she makes whimsical metal Folk Art with a decidedly quirky bent. You might have seen the work in Curiosities Gift Shop under the name Acme Animal. While the company was the brainchild of Don Gidley and artist/designer Sue Parke (other long- time residents of Old South), Nancy took the reins when they retired. She continues in the Acme tradition making clocks, menorahs, ornaments, and candlesticks, all featuring fun animals. “I love that I can walk around the neighbourhood and admire all the old houses and gardens,” she shares. Those walks introduced her to neighbours, leading her to the organizations and events she has been involved with while living here including being a vendor at Gathering on the Green, donating prizes to Halloween in the Village and participating in some of the early London Artists’ Studio Tours. Her daughter’s teachers often found special Acme ornaments tucked into appreciation gifts when she was at Tecumseh Public School.
