VCI DEDICATES JERSEY DAY TO HUMBOLDT BRONCOS

The flags hung at half-mast April 12 at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institution (VCI). Students and staff at VCI dedicated Jersey Day in Canada to the memory of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey club and the tragic accident that took the lives of many young hockey players. Students with VCI’s Interdisciplinary Studies program organized a Thursday morning memorial tribute. The full student body was in attendance in the school’s cafetorium. “It was such a big tragedy and we wanted to bring out awareness,” said Caitlyn Allen, one of the organizers. Allen, along with Kait- lyn Sauriol, Samantha Cummings, Genevieve Jones, and Cayden Austring, took the lead on the project, with the rest of the 23-member class providing support. Teacher-liaison Christine Sauvé noted that the tragedy struck home to many students and staff at VCI. “This is a rural school in a rural community,” Sauvé said. “Every event we have to attend, we travel to on the bus.” The Humboldt Broncos of Saskatchewan were on the road April 6 for their semi-final series against the Nipiwan Hawks. Early that evening, halfway to their destination, a truck hit their bus. As of April 12, the death toll from the accident was 16, with many players and some of the coaching staff and volunteers dead at the scene, while others later succumbed to their injuries. The rest of the team and their adult chaperones were still in hospital for treatment as of press time. Last Thursday’s memorial at VCI included reading out the names of the deceased. to lead in a minute of silence then placed their game sticks in a circle around a table with a memorial bouquet. The VCI Interdisciplinary Studies group has a green ribbon campaign at the school, selling memorial ribbons for a dollar. All the proceeds go to the GoFundMe online fund- raiser for the benefit of the Broncos hockey club families. CHANDAIL POUR HUMBOLDT
Le jeudi 12 avril était le jour du Chandail pour Humboldt à l’École publique secondaire Le Sommet à Hawkesbury. Miguel Jeaurond, le président et Tyler Morris, le vice-président du conseil étudiant, ont recruté le soutien de la communauté scolaire pour envoyer un message de solidarité aux citoyens de Humboldt en Saskatchewan. Les élèves et les employés de l’école Le Sommet portaient un chandail sportif pour l’occasion. Ils ont également fabriqué une banderole qu’ils considèrent envoyer en Saskatchewan. Les résidents de Humboldt sont en deuil à la suite d’un accident survenu le 6 avril, qui a couté la vie à plusieurs joueurs de l’équipe de hockey junior, les Broncos. En tout, 16 personnes sont décédées, incluant le chauffeur de l’autobus qui transportait l’équipe. —photo Michel Lamy
Les Kodiaks ont rendu hommage, le 12 avril dernier, aux Broncos d’Humboldt, et ce, d’une multitude de façons. Les joueurs de hockey de l’École secondaire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury (ESCRH) ont pris un temps lors du tournoi pré-franco pour montrer leur soutien. Ils se sont aussi ralliés aux joueurs d’Alexandria pour y arriver. D’autres élèves, comme Kasandra Lacombe et Emily Ethier ont porté des chandails de l’équipe. Au pavillon, il y a eu un rassemblement au gymnase. Des élèves avaient aussi apporté des bâtons qu’ils ont disposés le long de l’entrée principale. Presque tous les élèves, de la 7e à la 12e, ont participé à cette journée, chacun se recueillant à sa façon. —photo fournie
