Ward 8 Update from City Hall
This fall, we should also notice a difference in traffic issues along Fiddlers Green Road for our students at Oakridge Secondary School and West Oaks French Immersion School, with the installation of permanent speed cushions. Here’s wishing a healthy and safe return to school and a fantastic season ahead!
by Steve Lehman, Ward 8 London City Councillor, slehman@london. As we say goodbye to another wonderful summer, we find ourselves getting excited for the beginning of the school year and fall season ahead.
Over the past few months, we got to enjoy some free community activities hosted by the City of London through Play Your Way, free swim and BBQ events from the Oakridge Optimists, Oakridge Pride, and free golf for kids 13 and under in celebration of the Thames Valley Gold Courses centennial anniversary – just to name a few. Although this summer brought lots of days of sunshine, we also saw a few days of extraordinary rainfall causing quick grass growth and noticeable flooding throughout the entire city. I know the summer brought traffic challenges with construction, but it’s for the upgrades of sewers that our crews are working on to separate stormwater and sewage to mitigate future severe rainfall we are witnessing. I was happy to see the much-needed repaving work on Riverside Drive and Sanatorium Road getting a much-needed rework, not to mention the reconstruction of Prince Phillip Court. I will continue to advocate for other roads in our area that need paving repair such as Manchester.

Fall Maintenance Tips 1. As summer fades and fall approaches, it’s a good time to keep up with your vehicle’s maintenance. First off, consider replacing your wiper blades annually, especially before winter hits, so they’re ready when the weather turns nasty. 2. Don’t forget about your spare tire; it can lose pressure depending on where it’s stored, whether it’s under the car, on the back, or in the trunk. 3. Also, check your battery connections since loose or corroded ones can lead to starting problems down the line. 4. With longer nights ahead, make sure your headlights are bright enough to light your way. 5. Lastly, keep an eye on your tire pressure and remember to rotate your tires every 10,000 kilometers to ensure they wear evenly and last longer.

Hyde Park-Oakridge area students and The Grand Theatre’s High School Project! For more than 25 years, the Grand Theatre High School Project has offered an exceptional opportunity for students to receive education and training in the working environment of a professional theatre, at no cost to the participants. High school students from the London area are mentored by professional artists and coaches in all departments (performance, stage management, props, wardrobe, scenic art, orchestra, sound, lighting, marketing, and more), culminating in a production staged on the Grand’s 839- seat theatre: the Spriet Stage. This year, the project presents the Tony and Olivier award-winning Matilda The Musical . Investment growth - Unit 7 This portion, when withdrawn, is known as an Accumulated Income Payment (AIP) and is taxable at your marginal tax rate plus an additional 20% tax. The additional 20% tax can potentially be avoided by transferring up to $50,000 AIP from the RESP to your Registered Retirement Savings Plan with available contribution room with no immediate tax consequence. What happens to your RESP if your child doesn’t go to school? Many Canadians contribute to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) to cover costs related to their child’s/grandchild’s post-secondary education. But what happens to the money inside an RESP if a child (beneficiary) chooses not to pursue a qualifying educa- tion program? What if a beneficiary doesn’t pursue postsecondary education? The money in an RESP comes from three different sources, which are each treated differently upon withdrawal. If a child doesn’t attend a qualifying education program, money can be withdrawn from an RESP as follows: Contributions Contributions can be withdrawn with no tax consequence. Meet Milton Milton Gougoulias is the President and a Coach at AEL FC Canada, a soccer club based in Hyde Park since 2012. He tells us “Having grown tremendously, we now have over 300 players (male and female) in the academy ranging in ages from three to fourteen. AEL FC offers three streams: an IE competitive program, a house league program and a player development program. We have 14 teams in the competitive league and have signed working agreements with European agencies and scouts representing clubs in England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Poland and Greece. We have sent players to Europe for professional tryouts. We are always receiving player profile videos from players in London, Quebec, BC, the United States and as far as South America! In the upcoming months AEL FC is sending a 12-year-old player to England and Greece for a pro try out! AEL FC is a large family and focuses on inclusion and affordability for everyone.” He and Tom Gougoulias, Vice President and Coach, are most proud when children who had very little interest in playing soccer at the beginning of the season end up not wanting to miss a practice because they have so much fun. They also enjoy seeing the improvement in the player’s skill level. “I am very proud of the players who are given the opportunity through AEL FC Canada for professional tryouts with top European clubs!! I am very proud of all the coaches, their quality skill level and their commitment to AEL FC and to see that the academy is more like a family with cohesive teams playing so well together. Piping Hot new Soup & Sandwich Shop “There are many aspects of Piping Kettle that drew me into pursuing it as a franchise opportunity, but what interested me the most was the history and the vision of Piping Kettle,” explains Krysten Rodwell, owner of the new soup and sandwich outlet in Hyde Park. “I liked the idea of being a part of the growth and development of a small local business that focuses on and takes pride in serving quality food. Food is such an important aspect of our daily busy lives. Piping Kettle shows people that you do not have to compromise on quality, health, or taste when getting a quick meal. That’s something to be proud of.” “ The most rewarding component of it, other than hearing the excitement when we have someone’s favourite soup on that day, is building lasting relationships within our community – lasting relationships with our team of dedicated employees, with our regular customers, with our business partners, and with other local businesses that we respect and mutually support. It makes you realize it’s so much more than ‘just soup’.” Krysten says that Broccoli and Cheddar is one of their customers’ favourite soups out of over 160 soup recipes in regular rotation. “Staples like Jambalaya, Turkey Chili, and Chicken Noodle have been long-time favourites. Newer to our menu and rapidly rising in popularity are our soups like Creamy Dill Pickle and Cheddar, Chicken Shawarma, and Spiced Red Lentil and Kale.” Soup, sandwich, salad and smoothie orders are prepared fresh for walk-in customers to take-out or eat-in, or can be pre-ordered for pick-up or delivery at www.pksoup.com. There you will find the option to place immediate orders as well as scheduled-ahead orders. “We are also partnered with all the delivery apps available in this area,” says Krysten. Looking for a healthy and satisfying option for business meetings or home or office parties? “We make catering for groups of any size very easy with our 5 and 10-litre kettles of soup,” said Krysten. “The
kettles plug in to keep the soup the perfect temperature for your entire event. Our platters of sandwiches and salads are as visually stunning as they are delicious. We are happy to put together the perfect combination for your group’s tastes and dietary needs.” Krysten says that when she is not thinking about soups and sandwiches, she likes to get out in the community and surrounding area. “There is so much going on in this city, so many experiences and new businesses to explore and try. Walking and hiking the trails in and around London offer a great way for me to spend time with my family and dogs, a personal favourite.” Piping Kettle at 1600 Hyde Park Road (at Gainsborough) opened in June. There is lots of parking available. Learn more and see the soup of the day at www.pksoup.com.

HISTORIC HYDE PARK How the Bridges Got their Names from The Streets of London by Miss Harriet Priddis, published 1909 Improved roads naturally suggest bridges. The first way of crossing over to the “Forks” after Beverley’s Ferry, was by means of York Street Bridge, properly named Westminster Bridge. In christening its bridges, the “Forest City” first showed the tendency, which subsequently became a mania, for reproducing the nomenclature of the older metropolis on the Thames. The survivors of rebellion days tell funny tales about the blockading and manning of Westminster Bridge; though a few strong men could have carried the structure away bodily, and an invading army might have crossed the stream at either side without bothering about a bridge at all. There is a pathetic story told by an old resident relative to Blackfriars Bridge, the building of which followed very soon after that of Westminster. In the sad cholera times of 1832 the Rev. Edward Boswell, first resident Church of England Clergyman in London, met on the bridge every traveller coming towards the town, warned him of the danger of infection, and supplied his wants — generally medicine at that time — and also gave him instruction for treatment in case he should be brought in contact with the scourge. Besides Westminster and Blackfriars Bridges, Victoria on Ridout Street, Vauxhall on Egerton Street, Kensington on Dundas Street, undoubtedly have cockney sponsors ; but the names

of Cove Bridge, Adelaide Street Bridge, Oxford Street Bridge, and King Street Bridge, come from natural consequence of position, and certainly the remaining two are all our own.

Thanking Linda Family, friends and a long list of acquaintances who had been privileged to know her were saddened by the loss of Linda (Boland) Brimson in June. Many others who never met her, benefitted from her long hours of dedicated volunteer work. I met Linda, then a typesetter with Murray Kelly Printing on Adelaide Street South, when hired as a proofreader, about 1975. Linda patiently taught me how to mark up a ‘galley proof’ (this was before the advent of desktop publishing, PDFs and email) with standard proofreading marks and a red pen. A moment’s thoughtfulness from Linda could have long-ranging impact on the lives of others. Some twenty years later, when Linda was working in the graphic arts department at London Life and I had worked in various design agencies, newspapers and print shops, she encouraged me to apply for a graphic artist / marketing coordinator position at Diamond Aircraft that she felt was meant for me. She was right: I went on to enjoy a gainful 18- year career with the aircraft manufacturer. At age 50, Linda changed career direction, became a Registered Nurse and worked at The Sisters of St. Joseph until retiring in 2023. Retired? Hardly. With her life-long interest in local history (especially rural and aviation history) and writing, and her natural generosity and strong work ethic, Linda devoted countless hours of volunteer work for the RCAFA 427 (London) Wing, the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association (CHAA) and Re-Forest London and supported other charities too. As a contributor to the 427 Wing newsletter and as author of The CHAA Story , she helped preserve Canadian aviation history. She took on the tedious in-depth tasks such as filing applications for government funding, developing fundraising campaigns (her 2022 427 Wing calendar was a big hit) and helped organize special events. A Hyde Park resident, Linda also contributed articles to the Hyde Park-Oakridge Villager. “Linda Brimson was a dedicated, highly-respected Life Member of CHAA,” wrote Sandra Sparkes. “She loved our Harvards and all things history-related. During her years with us, she gave so freely of her time and expertise and took on several important projects including many Canadian aviation history displays. Her warm smile, true friendship, giving nature and ‘let’s get it done together’ attitude was addictive and is sorely missed. Blue skies and tailwinds, Linda!” Of course, family was always foremost. Linda was the dear mother of Trevor and proud grandmother of four. She is survived by her mother Theresa Boland, her three brothers and their wives, and her nieces and nephews. “She was the Mom offering
water, popsicles and snacks to a lot of hungry guys at baseball,” recalls Trevor. “Mom did a lot during her 69 years with us. She accomplished a great many things, she met an even greater number of people but most of all she touched all our lives in some way and we’re all better for having known her.”

Among other things, she helped with and then assumed responsibility for organizing our monthly community outreach hot breakfast program at Wilfrid Jury Public School. In addition, she took over the major position of treasurer for our club – extending that role to include looking after the finances for our two annual fundraisers, which allow us to carry out the many initiatives approved by our club. When help is required, Toni steps up and does indeed “give back to the community” and in doing so helps to make the Rotary Club of London-Hyde Park the best service club it can be. Thank you and congratulations to this year’s Paul Harris Fellow recipients for helping to make our community a better place in which to live. 2024 Wine & Food Pairing Fundraiser Most Successful to Date Friday, May 3, 2024 marked another financially successful, sold-out fundraiser for the Rotary Club of London Hyde Park. The 120 guests were presented with six dishes representing the best in Spanish cuisine by West Haven’s Chef Darrell and his staff. Each dish was accompanied by a wine specifically selected by our wine expert Malcolm to enhance the dishes and wake up the taste buds. As a special treat, recipes for the dishes served, along with suggestions of wines to serve with them were included in the program printed by Sterling Marking Products. Funds earned through sponsorships, silent and live auctIons and the raffle allow our small club to carry out the projects approved by the club. Tickets cover expenses. Our treasurer Toni reports that we will net just over $19,000 to do good both in the local and internatIonal communiIes. Sponsorships and Raffle proceeds were up, Silent AucIon proceeds were down and Live Auction proceeds were up from last year. Geoff Faul from the Rotary Club of London Lambeth, and Tom Telfer from the Rotary Club of London North. The award recognizes individuals who exemplify the values of Rotary, and Belton’s dedication and impact in both local and international projects made him a deserving recipient. His commitment to service and leadership continues to inspire Rotarians in London and beyond.
