9 i = É that she would be called upon to stay with Tim and the twins while Mother went to the city to be near him. Nancy didn’t pilnd the work, and the twins were good little helpers. But lately she had been worried about Tim. He was so late coming home, these nights, and he avoided her ques­ tions. He acted as though being four­ teen gave him the right to be inde­ pendent of her entirely, but she knew that he had been running with boys who were rough and daring, and who might lead him to wrongdoing.

“Not q u i t e ready,” answered Big Sister Nancy with a smile. “ Timmie isn’t home from school yet." Nancy looked at the clock again, and sighed a wee sigh that the twins did not hear. They were in the hall by this time, hanging up their coats and chattering about the Bible class from which they had just come. It was a big responsibility for nineteen-year-old N f n c y to manage the household while both Father and Mother were away. But when Father enlisted in the army a year ago, she had promised to help Mother carry on until he was home again. Nancy was proud of him and glad to do her part to help. She could not know, then, that he would be wounded arid have . to spend weeks in a hospital, and

A ll nqhu used to be courteous and sweet-tem­ pered but now so often he was gruff and even rude. Only that morning he had s t o r m e d at the twins for knocking over his model airplane. And to a simple question of Nancy’s he had snapped, “None of your business!” He was later than ever tonight, but supper was ready, so Nancy called the twins and the three sat down to eat together. “Did you get a letter from Mother today?” asked June after grace was said. "Yes, and Father is getting along so well that he will be able to come home soon. The letter has one other special paragraph for you to think about, too,” and Nancy read: “This year will be the first time our family has been separated on New Year’s Eve. I hope, my dear, that you and Timmie and the twins will not forget our usual New Year’s Eve ceremony.' It helps so much to know that you are being faithful there at
