LESSON STORY: Mothers brought their babies and little boys and girls to Jesus. They wanted Him to see

Christ, and receives the Father’s ap proval. 4. "He took them up in his arms • . . and blessed them" (Mk. 10:16). “The only things ever said to be in the arms o f Jesus were trustful, help less children.” This action of our Lord reveals His great love and concern for the welfare of children, and shows how e 81 that the c h i l d represents should be treated. 5. - "For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to min ister, and to give his life a ransom for many" (Mk. 10:45). By many this is considered to bp the key v e r s e of Mark. True greatness is under dis cussion in the context. Our Lord de clares that the way up is the way down. He gives His own experience as the finest possible example of this truth. I f the Son o f man cannot come to the place of exaltation without first stooping to be a suffering Servant, how can James and John or any one else expect to be great, apart from walking the humble pathway of serv ice? This key v e r s e presents the mighty Servant o f Jehovah as thfe One who made public payment of the debts of sinful men to a Holy God. His death was the price of man’s re demption. There is a picture by - Martin, en titled “Marcus Curtius,” which illus trates one of the great acts of sacri fice of ancient Rome. A chasm opened in the Forum, and the city fathers, consulting the oracle, were informed that it could be closed only by casting in the most precious thing in Rome. Marcus Curtius, a noble Roman, hear ing this, mounted his horse and leaped into the gulf, which, according to the legend, immediately closed, fo r he gave his life for the good of the coun try. Even in those pre-Christian days, self-sacrifice was recognized' as the. noblest of a ll.acts, and he who ex hibited it was recognized as the great est of heroes.— Twenty-five Hundred Best Modern Illustrations, by HalloCk. LESSON: This morning we w ill let this golden “H” remind us of a very important word in the Bible—“Humil ity.” The disciples of Christ had been disputing a m o n g themselves as to w h i c h one should be the greatest. Jesus, wanting to correct them, and make them humble instead of proud, said, “If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last o f all, and servant of all” (Mk. 9:35). The dis ciples were slow to learn this lesson, and Jesus later said, “Whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be the servant o f all” (Mk. 10:43, 44). Because the disciples still did not understand, Jesus gave them the ex ample of Himself. In Mark 10:45 He said, “For even the Son o f man came not to be ministered unto, but to min ister, and to give his life a ransom fo r many.” This golden “H ” will help us further to understand what Christ was talk ing about. We fold it, and it becomés a red cross, reminding us that He humbled Himself and d i e d on thè cross in order that He might sàvè us from sin. In Philippians 2:5, we read, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” In thinking of humility, let us re member Christ’s example, and pray that God will make us more like Him. cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. . 8’ 8 And many spread their garments In the way; and others cut down branches off the trees, and strewed them in the way. 9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: 10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of Lord; Hosanna in the highest. 15 And they come to Jerusalem; and Jesus went Into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seats of them that sold doves; 16 And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple. 17 And he taught, saying unto them, 1»

them: Let “ the little children . . . come unto me and forbid them not” (v. 14). He wanted the boys and girls to know that He would always be glad to have them near Him. And He wanted the grown people .to know that they must be like trusting chil dren themselves if they were to please God. Then a beautiful thing happened. The Lord Jesus stooped down and lifted the children, one after another, and held them in His strong, loving arms. The Bible says He “ put his hands upon thpm and blessed them” (v. 16). He could do that because the children went to Him when He called them. * Although we cannot see Him in the same way that those other children did, the Lord Jesus is here today, and He wants little children to come to Him. They will be happy then. Moth ers and fathers and teachers w ill be happy, too. Best of all, the Lord will be glad.
