family, so the children must shift for themselves. Consequently they do not have the benefit of a proper home life and discipline. 3. Poverty has been the cause of much disease and has resulted in pobr health. The Negro often lives in un healthy surroundings,. and in poor houses. Such conditions are frequent ly the cause of seeming laziness and carelessness. 4. A depth of religious fervor leads many astray into excessive emotional ism, due to the lack of a proper knowl edge of the Word of God. Conclusion What attitude shall I take toward the Negro, and what is my responsi bility toward him? God’s Word gives the perfect answer in Matthew 20:25- 28; 1 Corinthians 9:19, 22; 10:33; Gala tians 5:13, 14s. and James 2:1-9. FEBRUARY 20, 1944 M Y NEIGHBOR : THE JEW R o m a n s 1:14-16; 2:10, 11; 10:1-15 By Hyman Appelman Introduction I am a Jew. I was born in the city of Mogilev, on the Dnieper River, in Russia. I came to the United States when I was twelve years old. Every crimson drop of blood in my body car ries deepest affection for this glorious country. I was old enough in Russia to feel the stigma of being a Zhid, a proscribed, hated, to be abused, spat upon, beaten-up Zhid. In America it was all gone. I could breathe freely. I need not be afraid of the nights, of the drunken holidays when Jew baiting was the chief sport. There were no separate schools, one for the Jew, and one for the Gentile. The Gentile boys and girls, although laughing, perhaps rudely, at my mis pronounced English, welcomed me to their sports, their games, and even took the time to teach me. What this country has granted me so generously and graciously is the need also of others of my people. I should like to set down in black and white a few of the benefits for which I, a “neighbor” Jew, am profoundly and eternally thankful. I should .need a greal deal more space than the5lim its of this brief article to tell all that is on my heart. May I just therefore mention three surging thoughts that come to my soul as J think of all that America has done for me. I. THANKFUL FOR CHRIST. I love America most of all because It gave me the Lord Jesus Christ and salvation. Here the gospel was preached to me. Here the cross of the i-nrd Jesus was lifted up before me. Here salvation was proffered me in the gift of God’s grace backed up by yearning, loving, anxiety of Christian hearts. There was no compassionate concern in the heart, in the activities, in the services of the Russian church goer, priest, or layman. The whole sys tem was keyed to a superstitious wor ship of images. To this Jew, it was ah idolatrous system that revealed very little of the truths of the gospel that gripped my hungry heart in America. II. THANKFUL FOR SYMPATHY AND PROTECTION. I am married to ’an American-born girl. We have two children. We live in the great state of Texas. My work takes me all over the United States. I am away from home for weeks, even months at a time. I am not afraid for my home, nor for my little family. The police protection afforded my Gentile neighbors and their homes is ours also. The schools that trained me w ill gladly opefi their doors to my babies as they did to me. Every trade, every profession, every political posi tion, and every social privilege, are available to my loved ones. The neigh bors are kindly, friendly, more than eager to show their friendship, their kindness, their hospitality, their love. My children w ill never know the blighting shadow, the heart-gripping fear of religious persecution, of racial discrimination that were mine as a child. III. THANKFUL FOR OPPORTUNITY. America gave me the education that would have been absolutely denied to me, a Jew, in the Russia of my time. It gave me the political freedom, and the right of suffrage that were dented under the czars. It gave me economic standing, the right to own property, and many other things involved that were definitely prohibited In the Old Country. America opened the doors of the grade school, of the high school, and of the university to me. Later,
