not readily hear the still, quiet voice of the Spirit We must draw apart and, shut out the noises of earth. —Biblical Research Monthly. 23. The Pilgrim's Task “Having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is fa r better: Nevertheless, to abide in the flesh is more needful fo r you” (Phil, 1:23, 24). You are a stranger and a pilgrim here. Heaven is your home. But on this pilgrim pathway the Lord needs you to witness fo r Him. You are His ambassador. Then let each day be one o f sweet submission to Him, and o f loving service fo r Him, and ere long you will see those blessed lights which w ill give you an abundant en trance into your heavenly home. —Grace and Truth. 24. A Fact to Accept “ Abide in me, and I in you” (John 15:4). Above all else develop the habit of depending upon the fact of His pres ence. Short of this there can be no abiding in Him. I f He is not here with me how can I abide in Him? But He is with me! He is right here! That I'a t times do not sense His pres ence does not change the fact of it. My spiritual faculties may be dull. S i c k n e s s and circumstances may make it difficult fo r me to “ feel” His nearness. Still, He is here! He and I are one. I am “ in Him” and He is in me. I don’ t have to worry about all this—it is simply so, and I rejoice in the fact of it.—J. T. ZamraziL 25. The Tonic of Thanksgiving * “G iving, thanks always fo r all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph. 5:20). The redeemed o f the Lord should ever be praising Him who has saved us in His rich grace, and who lav ishes upon us evidence after evidence of His Fatherly love and care. An unthankful child of God is« ever a strange anomaly. . . . We should worry less if we p r a i s e d mo r e . Thanksgiving is the enemy o f discon tent and dissatisfaction. When tempt ed to doubt and fear, begin to praise God for past mercies, and faith will be increased.—H. A. Ironside. Clear Reflectors “ That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him" (2 Thess. 1:12). You and I should be mirrors, re flecting Jesus Christ. Many people do not know Jesus, fo r they do not read the New Testament, which describes Him. He is in heaven and no one on earth can see Him, but we, His dis ciples, should r e f l e c t Jesus: His truthfulness, goodness, patience, kind- 26.

19. The Power of His Presence “And he said, Certainly I will be with- thee” (Ex. 3:12). The great law-giver’s first reaction was to think of his own inadequacy fo r the task. It would have been dan gerous fo r him to feel otherwise. It is dangerous for any of us to feel self-sufficient. But knowing that our sufficiency is o f God, we have no alternative but to carry out his or ders. To Moses he said, “Certainly I w ill be with thee.” To you and to me he says, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” —George Murray. 20. Divine Resources “Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient fo r them, that every one o f them may take a little” (John 6:7). Poor Philip is still living in the realm of pennies where pounds are just as easily provided. He answers in the natural, when he ought to have reached out into the splendors of the supernatural. How w o n d e r f u l it would have been if Philip had replied, “We need not buy, fo r Thou canst supply.” But, are we any quicker to see with confidence the divine re sources far above and beyond our need? Philip’s answer may have been a common sense one in view of the circumstances, but it was an answer bereft o f a consciousness of the di vine power. Common sense is not al ways commensurate with Christ’s presence and power. —Albert Hughes. 21. Imperfect Clay “ But now, O Lord, thou art our Father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work o f thy hand” (Isa. 64:8). The potter does not work blindly with nothing in mind. He has a beau tiful pattern for this bit of clay, and he is seeking to make this pattern a reality. God used the picture of the potter as a simple illustration to re veal the blessed fact that He, the Master Potter, has a purpose and pattern, that is unique and beautiful for each individual life. . . The only reason that that purpose was not realized was that something went wrong with the clay. —Vincent Bennett. In Quietness “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow o f the Almighty” (Psa. 91:1). It is in “ the secret o f his pres ence” that we can best learn His will fo r us; fo r it is there, in the silence and the stillness o f communion and fellowship with Him, that He speaks to us through His Word. The ear that is open to the call o f the world will 22.
