Over the past three years, our team has brought you the Faces of Greater Baton Rouge, a celebration of the remarkable individuals who make our community vibrant and dynamic. This year, we decided to embark on a new journey, expanding our focus to not only highlight the exceptional faces of our community but also the amazing places that define our local landscape. Take the time to explore the stories of the wonderful people and places featured within. These individuals and businesses are not just participants in our publication; they are the backbone of our community, the driving force behind our local economy, and the heart of our shared experiences. Our community sponsors, the Baton Rouge Area Chamber and Visit Baton Rouge, have been instrumental in bringing this publication to life. Their support and commitment to our community’s growth and leadership are invaluable. This book would not have been possible without their partnership, and for that, I extend my deepest gratitude. Both the Chamber and Visit Baton Rouge play vital roles in fostering a thriving community, and we are grateful for their unwavering support. Faces and Places is more than a magazine; it is a testament to the spirit of Baton Rouge. It celebrates the people who inspire us, the places that shape us, and the community that unites us. As you read through these pages, I hope you feel a sense of pride in our community and the incredible stories that make it unique. Please read it, keep it, and pass it along. Places of Baton Rouge LSU Rural Life Museum and Burden Museum & Gardens Years in Business: 54 years

for parents, extended family, and caregivers to interact while learning about Louisiana’s rural past. When paired with a visit to the surrounding trails and gardens, there is sure to be something for every member of the family. What do you enjoy the most about having the museum in our area? Baton Rouge has a fantastic museum community, and that is because of the dedicated supporters and visitors we have in the region. At the LSU Rural Life Museum and Burden Museum & Gardens more broadly, we are a one-stop destination for those interested in history, the artifacts and objects from our past, art, vernacular architecture, nature, gardens, crafts and artisans and so much more. We’re right in the middle of Baton Rouge, but when you enter the property it is like you’re traveling through the countryside and back in time. What’s next for the museum? The LSU Rural Life Museum and LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens (collectively Burden Museum & Gardens) are launching Louisiana Lights: Where the Holidays Shine. This new, immersive holiday experience will premier in late fall 2024 and is sure to quickly become a holiday tradition for families in Louisiana and beyond.

The LSU Rural Life Museum was founded in 1970 with a purpose “to increase the appreciation of our heritage and the way of life of our ancestors, their hardships, toils, vision, inspiration, and determination by preserving something of the architecture and artifacts from our rural past.” The museum contains over 35 historic structures and more than 15,000 artifacts that tell the rich history of the people and culture of rural Louisiana from the eighteenth through the early twentieth century. A part of Burden Museum and Gardens, the museum also includes admission to Windrush Gardens, a 25-acre semi-formal garden that began over a century ago. Annual Events ■ Harvest Days ■ Haints, Haunts & Halloween ■ A Rural Life Christmas ■ Old Fashioned Easter ■ Apprentice Program ■ Zapp’s International Beer Fest Educational Opportunities ■ Field Trips ■ Group Tours ■ Speaker series ■ And More. How do you make it a point to put families first? Most of our programming is created with multi-generational family groups in mind. Even visiting on a non-event day fosters exploration in children and the opportunity

The Face of BEHAVIORAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL PEDIATRICS Compass Neurodevelopment Center PHOTO CREDIT: KLEINPETER PHOTOGRAPHY

Neurodevelopmental disorders include a range of neurological impairments including Autism, Intellectual Disability, Learning Disorders, ADHD, concerns related to prematurity and developmental delays. They are estimated to impact 15% of children, which means approximately 150,000 Louisiana children may have a neurodevelopmental disorder. Formal evaluations are often needed for diagnosis and treatment, and there are few centers that offer such services. Compass Neurodevelopment Center was created to meet this need. Though the name may be new, the team behind it has years of experience with neurodevelopmental disorders. The Center is led by Developmental Pediatrician, Steven Felix, MD, and Pediatric Neuropsychologist Traci W. Olivier, PsyD. Dr. Felix has been in practice in Baton Rouge for the past 13 years but began in pediatrics over 35 years ago. He has specialized in Developmental Pediatrics for 28 years. Dr. Felix is known for developing and growing developmental clinics throughout the

United States. As the only Board-Certified Developmental Pediatrician in the Baton Rouge area, and one of few in the state, he works with schools, physicians, and other professionals to provide the highest level of care for children with special needs. Dr. Olivier is a fellowship- trained Pediatric Neuropsychologist who is also one of the few in the state. Drs. Felix and Olivier are joined by Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Emily McMann, to offer initial evaluations and diagnosis; treatment plans; follow-up; and limited medication management. This unique team, with their long-standing vision of establishing a neurodevelopmental center to serve children’s medical, educational, and psychological needs, is second to none in the region. Services will soon expand to include an interdisciplinary Autism assessment clinic, adult transition clinic and follow-up clinic for high-risk infants. We are pleased to introduce the Baton Rouge and surrounding communities to Compass Neurodevelopment Center, a place where your child will receive outstanding special needs care.

The Face of ABA THERAPY Grace Therapy Center PHOTO CREDIT: KLEINPETER PHOTOGRAPHY

Grace Therapy Center opened in 2021 in order to provide families with a comprehensive and collaborative approach to therapy. Now, only three years later, the center has expanded to three locations covering the Baton Rouge, Prairieville, and Denham Springs areas. Despite the expansion, the mission has remained the same: change lives. Katie Jenkins, the Executive Director of Grace Therapy Center, shares, “Our mission is to change lives and that includes employees, parents, families, and the kids that we work with. From parent training, all the way through the therapy that we offer, we have that mission in mind.” Grace Therapy Center provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy and family education, and works with children on their social skills throughout the school year and in camps they provide throughout the summer.

“Some of these kids come to us not talking, so we work all the way through those basic skills and even prerequisites, all the way through getting them ready to go to kindergarten or first grade. We only offer ABA right now, but we allow speech, OTs, and PTs to come in and have a space to work with them as well,” says Jenkins. The staff at Grace Therapy agree that seeing the children thrive each day is a highlight of their work. Along with that, seeing the relief the parents experience through the services the center provides is also special for those involved. “The best part is to see the relief in the parents, and also, the kids make such progress that it feels magical sometimes. It never loses its luster. It’s definitely something that you never get over,” says Jenkins. For more information about Grace Therapy Center and their summer camps (they fill up quickly!), visit gracetherapycenter.com.

The Face of CHILDCARE Kidz Karousel Early Learning Centers PHOTO CREDIT: KLEINPETER PHOTOGRAPHY

In 2006, Tessa and Derrick Holloway decided to make a life changing decision: purchase their first business, which happened to be a childcare center in Port Allen. “This was a business opportunity for us, which turned out to be what is now our life’s calling,” says Tessa. Fast forward 17 years, the couple provides care at 7 total centers, including 6 free standing childcare centers and the first micro center in Louisiana. Kidz Karousel Early Learning Centers are a force in the childcare industry. Tessa believes this growth and success is due to diversity, company culture, and a highly-trained staff. Kidz Karousel offers great benefits, including full medical insurance, as well as 401K to staff. These benefits, along with an opportunity for personal and professional growth, is what sets them apart from other employers. Tessa and Derrick, along with their staff, are working to change early childcare education through advocacy. Tessa currently sits on several boards and committees and pushes policies with groups, including Louisiana Policy

Institute for Children, Geaux Far Louisiana, LABI Workforce & Education Committee, EBR steering committee, and Ascension Ready Start Network advisory committee. She was recently elected as the President of Louisiana Association for the Education of Young Children. Tessa and Derrick agree that you must lead by example. In order to give Louisiana children a fair shot, it has to start with the policy makers. Along with Southern Consulting Group, a company they founded over 10 years ago, they assist parishes, businesses, and government entities in starting, managing, and operating childcare facilities. The couple also started a non- profit called LaForce (Louisiana Alliance Focused on Redefining Communities Everywhere). “We are happy to be the Face of Childcare, but our goal is still the same, for Kidz Karousel’s name and brand to be synonymous with Early Childcare Education and Advocacy. We want families of Louisiana to know we are fighting for their little ones no matter what early childcare center they choose to be part of,” says Tessa.

attain a healthier weight,” she explains. Clinical trials conducted at Pennington Biomedical are another important aspect of the Center’s research. These trials are essential to confirming new paths of prevention, detection, and treatment of childhood obesity and related diseases. “In general, obesity affects one in five of our kids in the country, and it is a serious health disease because it is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and many other diseases,” Dr. Staiano says. Currently, Dr. Staiano is working on technology such as apps and wearables that can help families attain healthier weights and develop healthier habits. “That’s really exciting for me, especially when we can work with pediatricians, dietitians, and teachers to use these programs that are based on evidence that we’ve shown are effective and can help families.” Pennington Biomedical aims to solve significant health problems associated with obesity through research, clinical trials and implementation. Learn more about the pediatric clinical trials available near you: pbrc.edu/clinicaltrials.

Pennington Biomedical is a campus of Louisiana State University and is at the cutting edge of treatments for obesity, diabetes and obesity-related chronic diseases. “We’ve been involved with every obesity medicine that’s on the market now and just about every diabetes medicine,” says Dr. Amanda Staiano, a developmental psychologist at Pennington Biomedical. “We’ve been involved with developing and testing these medications.” From doctors and researchers to scientists and nutritionists, Pennington Biomedical faculty members strive to find ways to help people who struggle with obesity and diabetes. Pennington Biomedical has attracted recognized leaders in their scientific field who are contributing to this cutting-edge research. The roster includes notables such as Dr. Staiano, as well as Dr. Peter Katzmarzyk, Dr. Daniel Hsia, Dr. Steven Heymsfield, and Dr. Leanne Redman. Dr. Staiano’s area of research is childhood obesity. An expert in children’s physical, mental, and emotional growth, her work also has implications for adults. “I design and test programs that help families who are trying to eat healthier, get more physical activity, sleep better, and ultimately,

The Face of PEDIATRIC HEALTH The Pediatric Place PHOTO CREDIT: KLEINPETER PHOTOGRAPHY

Ten years ago, board-certified pediatricians– Dawn Barrient, MD, FAAP; Kelly Busenlener, MD, FAAP; and Cherron Philippe, MD, FAAP–came together with a simple yet significant mission: deliver top-notch medical care to infants, children, and adolescents and establish close relationships with them and their families. With this mission in mind, The Pediatric Place was formed. “We were looking to provide a more personal and family-centered healthcare, and we could do that by being independent versus being a part of a big, multi-specialty group. We thought our families would really appreciate it being more geared towards them specifically,” says Dr. Busenlener. The pediatricians at The Pediatric Place help to create an environment at the clinic that is welcoming but with a personal touch. Dr. Barrient shares that the group wanted to create a healthcare experience that was meaningful to their patients, which is exactly what they have done. This excellent care has encouraged many patients who have seen the doctors when they

were younger to now bring their own children to be seen. This has helped develop relationships that are not often seen in a healthcare setting. “We’re a part of the family and they’re a part of our family,” says Dr. Philippe. Dr. Busenlener adds, “We are a small practice with very consistent staff so our patients and parents alike get to know our nurses and front desk by name. We know each other’s patients. While I may not see Dr. Philippe’s and Dr. Barrient’s patients, I know those families, too. I think that’s important to have consistent, familiar healthcare, especially with kids.” All three pediatricians have a love for what they do, especially in getting to see their families grow up over the years and building relationships with them that last. Among the many services provided, they also offer free consultations to expecting parents on a search for their baby’s pediatrician or to families looking to switch their child’s healthcare. The Pediatric Place is conveniently located in Baton Rouge, providing a centralized location for all of their patients. For more information, visit thepedplace.com.

The Face of AESTHETICS Zanellas Wax Bar PHOTO CREDIT: KLEINPETER PHOTOGRAPHY

What started as a new business in a tiny room in 2006 has blossomed into Baton Rouge’s premier full body waxing salon for men and women. There have been many changes throughout the years at Zanellas Wax Bar, but the heart and the values of the business have always remained the same. Zanellas Wax Bar is a small, family-owned business that Haley & Peter Dorsey became the proud owners of in 2021. After years of working alongside the previous owner, Haley’s knowledge of aesthetics has grown with the ever changing industry. She has kept the legacy of Zanellas alive while also creating a fresh, modern space to grow in the future.

“At Zanellas Wax Bar, we are all about the clients. Our goal is to create a comfortable and welcoming environment, while providing the best possible experience for each individual,” Haley says. “Whether it be your first Brazilian wax or your teenager’s first eyebrow wax, we are here to ease your mind through the process, and have you leave feeling your absolute best.” Haley loves to call Zanellas a “safe space;” one where all body types are welcome without judgment. You can come as you are and know that you are in good hands with professionals who love and respect what they do. The Dorseys look forward to many more years serving Baton Rouge, after all “there’s a Brazilian reasons to get waxed!”
