Growing Together With You

THE LEGACY WE LEAVE BEHIND HONORING NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY

My job requires me to have difficult conversations with people. Not long ago, I sat across from an 80-year-old man who had seen his fair share of life — some good times, some hard times, and some that still kept him up at night. He looked me square in the eye and said, “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: It’s never too late to fix what you can fix.”

He said, “I can’t undo everything. But I can make things easier for the people I leave behind.” Wow, that was like a punch in the gut to me! That day, we didn’t just talk about estate planning. We talked about redemption. We talked about how every step forward — no matter how late in life — is still a step toward peace. Many people believe they missed their window. They think, “I should have done this years ago,” and then keep putting it off because shame feels safer than action.

He didn’t say it like a man full of regret. He said it like a man who finally understood what really matters.

But this man reminded me: There is no wrong time to do the right thing.

He wasn’t there to talk about money. He wasn’t chasing some kind of legacy written in stone or printed on bank statements. He wanted to fix the right things. He wanted to see the people he’d drifted away from. He wanted to tackle the responsibilities he’d pushed off. He wanted to make the decisions he’d avoided because they were too emotional, overwhelming, or painful to face.

In life, you don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing to start. Pick up the phone and call the person you haven’t called. Sign the papers you have been reluctant to sign. Make the plans that you keep putting off. Take the next step — whatever it is — so your story ends on your terms, not by default. This Aug. 21, on National Senior Citizens Day, I hope we honor the people who have paved the way for us. But more than that, I hope we remember the power of today.

Happy with our service? We’d love to hear from you! We are always honored when our clients and associates refer their friends, family, and colleagues our way — or simply say kind things about our firm. If there is anything we can do for you, please let us know. We’re here to help!

Because today, you still have a choice, and you still have a say. Today, it’s never too late to fix what you can fix.

THE POWER OF A NAME HOW A REFERRAL TO THE DLG HELPED CHANGE A FAMILY’S FUTURE

Some stories start with a dramatic moment, and some don’t. The not-so-dramatic ones start with something quiet, like a conversation between neighbors. A woman came to us recently after being injured in a serious motor vehicle accident. She was overwhelmed, in pain, and scared about what would happen to her two young children if things got worse. She hadn’t planned for anything like this — and let’s face it: Most people don’t. When I asked her how she heard about the Dellutri Law Group (aka “The DLG”), she said a friend, someone we had helped years earlier, had told her, “You need to call them. They’ll take care of you.” That one sentence changed her entire life. She trusted her friend enough to make the call, and if you know me, you know that trust means the world to me. We were all hands on deck.

decision with care and empathy. But that is not where the story ends. The most important part of the story came months later.

She said, “That referral didn’t just help me with my case. It made me realize I had unfinished business.” She had never created a will. She had never thought about guardians for her children in case something happened to her, and she didn’t have a safety net in case of another mishap. Together, we fixed that. She told me about her fears, and we put a plan in place to alleviate those fears. Now, she has found peace, because she took control of what came next. A referral isn’t just a name. A referral means trust. It’s someone saying to you, “Take the next step, because I trust them.” A referral happens the moment someone decides to pass along help, instead of just hoping someone else will.

We helped her get the treatment she needed, fought the insurance company so she didn’t have to, and walked her through every legal

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE ICE CREAM BARS

People often think, “Estate planning is not for me, it’s for rich people. Besides, I don’t have anything to leave to anyone else. It’s just another box to check when life slows down.” The truth is, the most common mistakes we see aren’t legal — they’re human. They are mistakes about avoiding the inevitable. People delay making decisions. People are fearful of making the wrong decision. So, guess what happens? No decisions get made at all. The 3 Most Common Mistakes People Make in Estate Planning Are You Covered?

Inspired by ThePioneerWoman.com

INGREDIENTS • 1 pt strawberry ice cream • 1/4 cup strawberry preserves • 1 pt vanilla ice cream

• 1 5.25-oz package crispy sugar cookies • 1 0.8-oz package freeze- dried strawberries

A referral is the greatest gift we can receive from a client or fellow business! Last month we had ... • 33 referrals from friends, family, or previous clients • 9 returning clients for new matters • 7 referrals from other attorneys • 6 referrals from doctors and other professionals • We also send out referrals to our trusted referral partners! A Huge Thank-You to Our Referral Partners! What’s the Good News? “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” MATTHEW 19:26 DIRECTIONS 1. Stir strawberry ice cream in a large bowl until spreadable. Fold in preserves until evenly streaked throughout. 2. Stir vanilla ice cream in a separate large bowl until spreadable. 3. Spoon 1 1/2 tbsp of the strawberry mixture into the bottom of 8 (1/3-cup) popsicle molds. Spoon 1 1/2 tbsp of the vanilla mixture on top of the strawberry mixture into the molds. Repeat, alternating the 2 mixtures, until each mold is full. 4. Place sticks into the popsicles and freeze until solid, 4–6 hours. 5. In a large zip-lock bag, crush sugar cookies with a rolling pin until pieces are rice-size; pour into a shallow dish. 6. Repeat with freeze-dried strawberries and stir the pieces together. 7. Run the ice cream molds under warm water to release popsicles from molds. 8. Coat bars evenly with cookie mixture. 9. Eat immediately or place on a cookie sheet and freeze.

Here are the top three mistakes we see — over and over again:

1. Outdated Plans That Don’t Reflect Today’s Reality A client once brought us a will that was 27 years old. (That is not the oldest will we have ever seen.) In that time, two additional children were born, not to mention a grandchild. One relationship ended,

and the client’s chosen guardian for her children had passed away. This poor woman had no idea how far off course her plan had drifted until we looked at it and started asking questions. 2. Assuming One Person Can Handle Everything

Naming a single executor or trustee is common. But what if that person is gone? What if that person is no longer willing to serve? You need a backup plan. 3. Believing ‘It’s Simple, So I Don’t Need Help.’ I hear this a lot. But behind every “simple” situation is a story. Did you ever see a lawyer standing in front of law books? Those books are filled with stories that start like this: “This never should have happened, but …” or “You are not going to believe what happened in this case, but …” The issues in estate planning are rarely as simple as they seem. Don’t get me wrong: None of these mistakes come from bad intentions. They come from being busy, unsure, or afraid of opening a new door we have never opened before. That’s what we’re here for. We will walk you through that door and answer your questions. We are here to help you take one step at a time toward a plan that feels like peace — not pressure.

Hawaiian Laws You Have to See to Believe

STRANGE RULES IN A TROPICAL PARADISE HAWAII’S UNCOMMON LAWS

Don’t take it with you!

When you travel outside the continental United States, you often have to research the laws and customs of your destination to ensure you stay out of trouble. While this is certainly a good idea when visiting

Many people like to take a memento of their vacation home, such as a seashell or a rock. If you plan to do this while visiting Hawaii, you must be careful where you grab from. You cannot remove rocks, plants, or wildlife from state or national parks. Not only is this action illegal, but it also invokes the “Curse of Pele” upon the individual. Many who take rocks home with them end up mailing them back later after facing bad luck or misfortune. It sounds like something out of “Moana,” but it’s probably not worth the risk.

Europe, Asia, or another continent, you should also do research when visiting somewhere closer to home. Even Hawaii has strange laws you might not know about until it’s too late. Here are three of the weirdest laws you must follow when visiting Hawaii. One at a time. Many people who go to bars, concerts, or sporting events have a habit of getting two alcoholic drinks at once to ensure they

No skyscrapers. If you want to build a home or business in Kauai, you’ll have to keep the building shorter than four stories. It’s illegal for buildings to be taller than coconut palm trees on this island, which is how it has retained its natural beauty. Other Hawaiian islands do not have this law, which is why many high-rise hotels and resorts line the coast of Waikiki Beach.

don’t have to wait in line when they need their next drink. However, doing so in Hawaii could land you in trouble. To curb people’s drinking habits, the Aloha State does not allow people to have two drinks in front of them at one time. You also cannot order a multi-serving drink, such as a pitcher of beer, unless you’re with another person.
