The Retirement Hobby You Need to Try WES AND AUSTIN ENJOY A CLASSIC SPORT

We have the perfect activity for retirees, families, children, and young adults. Can you guess what it is? It’s an active sport, and you can find places to play it in nearly every city in the U.S. It has even undergone a renaissance of sorts in the last few years, adapting from a seedy, smoky environment to a great place for families, birthday parties, and casual gatherings. It’s also a hobby we have dived completely into in the past few months.

in the past, they are still pretty impressive. You can tell some of them have been bowling for ages; others just picked it up! Either way, they’re having a lot of fun. Before he was born, Austin’s parents were avid bowlers. They owned their own bowling balls and played in a weekly league. Prior to that, Austin’s grandfather was a bowler, too! However, as is common when you have children, Austin’s parents gave up their hobby to raise their family, and until recently, they hadn’t started again. Inspired by Austin’s experience, they are now! They started buying gear in late January, and at the time of writing this, they are in the market for a new ball. Throughout this entire experience, we’ve learned that bowling is an ageless hobby that encourages players of all types. We found a lot of support from Taylor’s Mark Pro Shop at Buffaloe Lanes. Matt Taylor is a professional bowler, but he doesn’t pass judgment or criticism. He does a great job of outfitting new and experienced bowlers with the right equipment to ensure they can enjoy the sport. He’s a helpful local resource for those who want to learn more. And we encourage you to learn more! You don’t have to make bowling a competition, nor do you have to bowl every week. But if you’re looking for a hobby to start in retirement, an event the whole family can enjoy, or a simple, fun way to stay active, bowling can offer that.

Give up? That hobby is bowling!

We know — to some it harkens back to a distant memory of bowling leagues, pints of beer, and healthier wrist joints. For others, it may seem like a quirky hobby reserved for children’s birthday parties and leagues. However, both of these assumptions are wrong! In the months we have immersed ourselves in the bowling world, perfected our craft, and invited our families to join us, we have learned that bowling is for everyone. As mentioned, we began bowling regularly two months ago. We’re both competitive by nature, so any sport that challenges us is going to capture our attention. But as we became more involved, we noticed bowling shared many similarities to another sport we enjoy, golf. Much like in golf, you have a technique you have to master. It’s another way to fuel our competitive spirit when we’re rained out at the golf course or want to bring our families with us.

We hope to see you on the lanes! –Wes White & Austin Kobilka

We also found an interesting phenomenon at these lanes, and it’s something that inspired us to write this article: There

are leagues with participants all aged 60 or older. They’re enjoying company, ribbing each other in

friendly competition, and even if they don’t throw as well as they may have

Protect Your Identity and Kick Scammers to the Curb 5 Ways to Deal With Annoying Robocalls

According to the latest data, scammers and telemarketers make 1,528 robocalls to Americans every single second . No wonder they’re driving us all crazy! Some of these calls are legitimate reminders about doctor’s appointments and payment plans, but around 55% of them are just nuisances — and we can’t rely on the government to stop them. If you’re sick of hearing about “your car’s extended warranty” or the “student loans” you paid off 40 years ago, try these five tips to cut down on robocalls and outwit scammers. 1. Explore your carrier’s free tools. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon all offer services to cut down on scam calls. Some of them are free and/or come with your phone, but others you have to pay for or activate. If you have Verizon, for example, you can download the “Verizon Call Filter” app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Visit your carrier’s website or call them to learn about the tools they offer. 2. Download an ad blocker. For extra protection, you can download a separate ad blocker from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Hiya is a free app that will give you caller ID and

block spam calls, and Nomorobo is an award-winning option that’s free for landlines and costs $1.99 per month for cellphones.

tend to persist along racial lines, and those who are people of color tend to earn less than white workers.) To put that in the context of retirement savings, when you make less money than one group of people, you tend to save less money than that same group. Another report found that women typically retire at an earlier age than men, which means they also have fewer years of earning. Besides the obvious disparity in savings, the problem women may face in retirement savings is that they typically have to rely on retirement accounts for longer periods of time than men. Women live longer than men. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men’s life expectancy is on average 76 years, while women tend to live to 81 years old on average. This means women need retirement savings for an average of five more years than men do. With all these factors, women face greater complexities than men do when saving for retirement. However, when you properly account for these obstacles and plan accordingly, you can create a plan that supports your goals, whether you are a man or a woman. These are concerns we discuss with our clients at Patriot Wealth, but if you have any questions after reading this article, please contact us today. 3. When in doubt, let it ring out. If you don’t recognize the number calling, don’t answer. You can always call back if they leave a legitimate voicemail. 4. Suspect spam? Hang up. So, you accidentally answered a spam call. Whether it’s a person or a robot on the line, hang up immediately! Even saying your name or the word “yes” could set you up for identity theft. 5. Handle voicemails with care. If you get a suspicious voicemail, never call the number or visit the website given by the caller. Instead, Google the company or agency they claimed to be with and call that number. If the real agency has no idea about the call, you’ve just escaped a trap. By taking all five of these steps, you can protect yourself and your wallet from Ponzi schemes, identity thieves, and annoying telemarketers. The Unique Obstacles Women Face in Retirement Why This Happens

Everyone deserves a safe, well-coordinated retirement plan that accounts for their goals and potential emergencies. Yet, retirement isn’t one-size-fits-all. In fact, there are numerous factors that may alter the way you save for retirement. One such factor is whether you’re a man or a woman. There are numerous obstacles to retirement planning that women face at a higher rate than their male counterparts. And it’s not for a lack of trying! CNBC reports that women tend to invest in retirement at higher rates than men. Yet, that same article cites another study that found women traditionally enter retirement with $70,000 less than men. The main reason for this disparity comes from wage gaps. The Pew Research Center reports that women tend to make 84% of what men make in the same fields. (Wage gaps also

It’s More Than Just Tidying Up 4 Health Benefits of Spring-Cleaning

SPRING-CLEANING HELPS YOU BREATHE BETTER. Spring often brings pollen that triggers allergies for many. But

Sunday, March 20, is the first day of spring — which means it’s time for some spring-cleaning. Did you know that cleaning is not just about tidying up a physical space? It’s also about improving overall well-being. Here’s how organization and cleanliness can help you in more ways than you might expect. SPRING-CLEANING REDUCES STRESS AND DEPRESSION. Tidiness and mental health are actually connected. Studies have found that having a clean home is directly correlated to happiness and your ability to focus. Anxiety can spike when laundry is piling up, items are strewn everywhere, and papers get scattered on various surfaces within the home. Clearing the clutter is a great way to boost your mood and increase those feel-good hormones. IT PREVENTS ILLNESSES. Doorknobs, refrigerator handles, light switches, countertops, and remote controls are all things we touch many times a day. Cleaning anything that’s used often is one way to reduce the spread of germs. By keeping household surfaces clean, we help thwart the spread of viruses and illnesses.

pollen isn’t the only thing to blame when people have difficulty breathing. When dust and pet dander build up in your home,

your respiratory system is greatly affected too. Deep-cleaning your air filters and vents can make breathing effortless — and it’s truly amazing how this can improve your well-being. IT KEEPS YOU MORE ACTIVE. Off the couch and on your feet! Even just running the vacuum and clearing the clutter from the dining room table will get you up and moving, which is healthy for your heart and body. This spring season, putting some elbow grease into your cleaning will benefit you in more ways than one. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!
