FLIP THE LENS
2024 SEPT
See the World as Others See It
A lot of the talk these days about running a business emphasizes
how others in his life might feel. He had often walked past a crew of craftsmen doing masonry work on his property and made small talk with them. But he had never once mentioned the most encouraging thing he could have said — that he appreciated the excellent quality of their work. To gain a fresh perspective, Mylett said, flip the lens and ask yourself how others see you. Ask yourself how you make them feel. And see how that changes your relationships. The benefits for others can be profound. When I was about 10 years old, I was a decent baseball player — until I stepped up to bat against a pitcher with a powerful fastball and a serious lack of control. He accidentally threw straight at me. I managed to get everything out of the way except my right leg, and he pelted me hard. It hurt like hell! I had a big old bruise. I had a hard time staying in the batter’s box after that. All I could think about was getting out of the way of that oncoming pitch. I’m sure most of my teammates dismissed my behavior as lacking in nerve. But one friend took me aside and listened as I told him about my fear. “Well, what’s the worst thing that can happen?” he asked. “You’re not going to get killed!” It was a reasonable point. I was wearing a helmet, and I probably wasn’t going to get killed. “You just have to hang in there,” my friend said. “You’re going to be all right.” So, I steeled myself. And gradually, I overcame my fear. Thanks to my friend’s ability to flip the lens and understand my perspective, he gave me exactly the encouragement I needed. Decades later, I still sometimes ask myself, in tough situations, what is the worst that can happen? Then I tell myself, “You can handle it.” On this National Day of Encouragement, I hope you can flip the lens, see the world through others’ eyes, and offer some heartening words. You may be surprised by the results!
planning, scheduling, and efficiency. But there’s a fine line between being efficient and being human.
Sometimes, I ask myself if I have done enough to let others know I appreciate them. I won’t say I do an amazing job of this, but I try to talk to the delivery drivers who serve our business. When FedEx, UPS, or USPS trucks arrive, I try to help them load boxes or at least let them know that I appreciate them. People routinely say “thank you” or “you’re welcome” without thinking much about it, but when another
person lets you know that they truly see and appreciate you and your effort, that adds a little extra satisfaction.
In recognition of Sept. 12 as the National Day of Encouragement, this is a good time to reflect on the importance of understanding how other people feel and see the world and reaching out with a word of encouragement when possible. As readers of this newsletter know, I enjoy podcasts by the speaker and entrepreneur Ed Mylett. He recently stumbled upon a jarring new insight he called “flip the lens.” During a visit to his mother, he held out his phone to take a selfie for Instagram. But the lens flipped unexpectedly, and he took a photo of his mother. That visual surprise unleashed a flood of thoughts. “Looking at my mom through this lens … I just had this flash of seeing my mom differently. And ironically, seeing my mom see me,” Mylett said. How did she experience their interactions? Did she have as much time with him as she would have liked? Were his visits with her too rushed? Mylett went on to reflect on

The Best Pre- and Post- Workout Meals and Snacks
Whether you’re gearing up for a heart-pounding workout or cooling down after an intense lift, choosing the right food can make all the difference. Let’s look at the best food options to energize you while working out and help you recover like a champ. PRE-WORKOUT FUEL Bananas With Peanut Butter: This dynamic duo is a favorite for a reason. Bananas provide quick-digesting carbs for a fast energy boost, while peanut butter adds protein and healthy fats. Plus, they taste amazing! Oatmeal With Berries: A bowl of oatmeal topped with fresh berries is a fantastic way to fuel your workout. The slow-digesting carbs from the oats give you sustained energy, and the berries add a burst of antioxidants to keep your muscles happy. Greek Yogurt and Granola: Greek yogurt is packed with protein to help prepare your muscles for action. Add some granola on top for a touch of sweetness and quick carbs to get you moving. Apple Slices With Almond Butter: This combo is crunchy, sweet, and satisfying. Apples give you the natural sugars you need for energy, while almond butter adds protein and healthy fats to keep you going strong.
Marcus Bonn-Miller was curious. As chief scientific officer for Charlotte’s Web Holdings, the leading maker of hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD)
products, Dr. Bonn-Miller is always looking for promising new products. He noticed a growing stream of anecdotal reports that products containing cannabinol, or CBN, help people sleep. Like CBD, CBN is a cannabinoid derived from hemp. However, reliable peer-reviewed research on CBN was lacking. “I looked at the science, and there really wasn’t anything — no clinical trials, nothing,” says Dr. Bonn-Miller. The need for helpful products was clear, as public health data shows at least 37% of U.S. adults don’t get adequate sleep.
Whole Grain Toast With Avocado: Avocado toast is more than a brunch staple — it’s also a great pre-workout snack. Whole grains provide lasting energy, and avocados contain healthy fats to keep you fueled. POST-WORKOUT RECOVERY Protein Smoothie: Blend up a smoothie with your favorite protein powder, a banana, spinach, and almond milk. It’s a quick and delicious way to refuel and rehydrate!
So, Dr. Bonn-Miller and his team designed and ran a clinical trial, developing a hypothesis, screening and recruiting nearly 300 participants, interviewing them by phone, reviewing videos of them taking CBN and CBD products or placebos, and analyzing data on their sleep quality.
The outcome was surprising, and it led to a ground- breaking new product. After testing four different CBN formulations containing 0, 10, 20, or 100 milligrams of CBD against a placebo, researchers found that the CBN-only product significantly reduced sleep disturbances and awakenings during the night. In an unexpected finding, those benefits disappeared when CBD was added to the gummies. “The effect just wasn’t there,” Dr. Bonn-Miller says.
Chicken and Quinoa Bowl: Lean chicken provides high-quality protein, while quinoa offers complex carbs and fiber. Along with veggies, this bowl is a balanced meal perfect for muscle recovery. Chocolate Milk: Yes, you read that right! Chocolate milk is a fantastic post-workout drink. It has the ideal ratio of carbs to protein for muscle recovery, plus it’s delicious. Hummus and Veggies: Crunchy veggies like carrots, celery, and bell peppers paired with creamy hummus make for a nutritious, protein-packed post-workout snack. Remember, the key to great pre- and post- workout nutrition is balance. Aim for a mix of carbs, protein, and healthy fats to keep your energy levels stable and your muscles strong!
That peer-reviewed study was the genesis of Charlotte’s Web’s new Stay Asleep CBN Gummies, its first CBN-only product. The product’s active ingredient is a 20 mg dose of CBN, and “it’s been doing amazingly well. We are hearing reports from people saying it has revolutionized their sleep,” Dr. Bonn-Miller says. Dr. Bonn-Miller says that Stay Asleep Gummies will likely be most impactful for chiropractic patients who suffer from pain, soreness, or injuries that disrupt their sleep. Neither CBN nor CBD contain any tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the main intoxicating ingredient in the cannabis plant, so they are legal nationwide and not subject to federal regulation.
AM GUMMIES POWERED TREATS EP, RESTFUL SLEEP
Charlotte’s Web is also launching a new line of gummy products containing mushrooms to aid performance, focus, and relaxation. Its new Stress Support gummies contain reishi mushrooms, ashwagandha, and Rhodiola root extracts. Its Focus Support gummies contain lion’s mane mushrooms, and the company’s Energy Support gummies include cordyceps and shitake mushrooms. Dr. Bonn-Miller says these mushroom-only products may attract retailers who are still
Charlotte’s Web since last year has offered a performance-support ReCreate product containing CBD and lion’s mane mushrooms. Lion’s mane has been shown in research to aid cognitive functioning and performance. To further reassure users of the product’s safety, the CBD in the ReCreate product line is third-party certified by the National Sanitation Foundation for use in professional sports, including Major League Baseball.
Dr. Bonn-Miller and his team read hundreds of studies to come up with the right formulations for the mushroom products. He says they also tested some products containing mushrooms, and many tasted earthy and rough. “We spent a lot of time with experts in gummy formulation to get our new products to taste great by blending in strawberry, tangerine, citrus, or peach iced tea flavors.” As a result, he says, “They taste amazing.”

Family Fun at the Tailgate 4
Score Big With Kid- Friendly Tailgates Football season is underway, and many Americans will start spending their Saturdays and Sundays tailgating in stadium parking lots. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to an NFL or college game; tailgating is a great way to spend time with your friends and family before the big game. While many tailgates consist of adult activities like drinking alcohol and blasting loud music, many prefer to make it a family affair. If you plan to have kids at your tailgate, you need to ensure they have everything they need to have fun. Here are a few ways you can help your kids make the most of their day at the tailgate! BRING KID-FRIENDLY SNACKS AND DRINKS. The average tailgate lasts a few hours, and most people enjoy at least one meal during that time frame. While most tailgate foods are simple appetizers and easy-to-make dishes, ask your kids or any kids attending if they want anything specific. Fill one of your coolers with sliced fruit and juice boxes to ensure your kids have a healthy food option and child-friendly drinks. PLAN A FEW DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES. Your kids will get bored if there’s nothing to do at the tailgate besides listening to pregame coverage and talking to others. Invest in
cornhole boards or other games, and see if someone in your group is comfortable with face painting. It doesn’t have to be extensive, but having a few kid-friendly activities prepared will keep boredom at bay. ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR THEIR TEAM. Whether you’re a fan of the home or away team, you and your kids should wear the right colors to show your support. Let your kids pick out a shirt, jersey, hat, or other team-affiliated apparel to help them get involved. Finally, don’t forget about your child’s need for a nap. Be sure to bring pillows and a blanket for them, and set up a comfortable spot for them to rest when needed. Doing so will allow everyone to enjoy the upcoming game to the fullest.
