About the Royal Academy

The Royal Academy of Arts (RA), founded in 1768 by a group of artists under the patronage of King George III, is a pioneering champion of artists and artmaking in the UK. From inception, our founding members set out to formal- ise the training of young artists and architects through the creation of the first ever arts school in the UK and stage the very first art exhibition for public enjoyment, the An- nual Exhibition. Today, these foundations remain: we continue to be led by our Membership of eminent artists and architects, the Royal Academicians; the Royal Academy Schools remain one of the foremost art schools in the country; and our ambitious and wide-ranging exhibitions programme con- tinues to inspire a wide, art-loving public. The respective strength and quality of each of our constituent parts (The Membership of artists and architects; the art school; the world-renowned exhibitions programme; and the unique collection of art and architectural works) and their com- bination under one roof, give the RA a unique character that is not shared by any other institution in the world. The RA remains truly exceptional because of its people. To deliver this impressive programme, we strive to cre- ate an inclusive, collegiate work environment, offering meaningful, professional careers to our staff. Through our employee training and development, we strive to sup- port every member of our staff in developing their career objectives. Our employee networks, equity and diversity groups, and our employee council are just a few examples of how we encourage all our colleagues to use their voice and their experience to influence the work we do.
