T wo b o y s were playing peacefully, when all of a sudden one of them pushed the other into the mud. The offended lad ran into his house scream ing, and the other boy headed for home. But, by the time he had gotten there, a phone call from the mother of the first child had preceeded him. His mother said, “Tommy, what do you mean by pushing Billy into the mud?” Quickly the child responded, “I couldn’t help it mommy. You see, the devil tricked me.” His mother was rather shocked at the response, so she pur sued, “What do you mean?” He vol unteered as best he could, “Well, you see, when the devil told me to do it, the idea seemed so nice, I thought it was the Lord!” I wonder if in our lives we don’t tell ourselves that some of the things on which our minds feed are harm less, that thoughts can never destroy our spiritual equilibrium. This is one of the clever and subtle tricks of our arch enemy, Satan. Turn with me to
a familiar verse, but an ever-important truth, found in Philippians 4:8. The Holy Spirit has moved the Apostle Paul to give us a perfect prescription for the removal of fears, worries, doubts and cares in the two verses preceed- ing. Listen to this suggestion in an hour when one out of every two hos pital beds is- occupied with someone who is suffering from mental or emo tional troubles. “Be careful for noth- ing” (worry about not one thing), “but in everything by prayer and supplica tion, with thanksgiving, let your re quests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all un derstanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Now there is God’s prescription for cleaning out the mind of all of the frustrations and fears which so often crowd in upon us, especially in these days of interna tional crisis and chaos.
