CAM: HALLO BERN, THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING THE INTERVIEW. TELL US ABOUT SAE AND WHAT YOU DO Bern: The SAE Institute is the world’s leading educator in the creative media industry, with 47 Campuses in 23 Countries. SAE South Africa currently has two campuses, in Cape Town and Johannesburg, with specialisations in Game Design, Audio, Film and Animation. CAM: AS A STUDENT HUB, ARE THERE ANY ISSUES AROUND MENTAL HEALTH THAT COME UP FROM AMONGST STUDENTS? Bern: Students tend to struggle with assimilating into the new environment and lifestyle of tertiary education, how it is differently managed in comparison to high school. They are dealing with the stress and possible anxiety around leaving home, heavier workloads, and a different working culture than what they are used to.

CAM: WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT STUDENTS BRING FORWARD? Bern: The most common mental health issues include anxiety, imposter syndrome, depression, and general stress. CAM: IF YOU COULD PICK ONE STUDENT STORY, WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO SHARE IT? Bern: A student needed to be constantly consulted with over the course of the term, due to late and missed assignments, continuous absence, as well as altercations with other students on campus. There are open door policies for all students, however reaching out to parents and sponsors has allowed for some external support for the student as well.
