END FALL LEAVES

If you’ve applied for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), then your claim was sent to a state agency called Disability Determination Services (DDS). In many cases, the DDS will follow up with a request for a consultative examination, otherwise known as a CE exam. These exams are performed by an independent medical doctor who has been contracted by the Social Security Administration.

If you have received a CE exam request, don’t panic. In most cases, the Disability Determination examiner feels that the medical records you provided weren’t recent enough or don’t address all the symptoms listed on your original application. So, if you receive this request, make sure you make it to your appointment, as not going to a Social Security medical exam can result in a case denial for failure to cooperate. WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT DURING THE EXAM The physicians who perform these exams are not employees of the SSA or DDS. They are asked to provide an updated record of a claimant’s medical condition, especially if it looks like the claimant has not been to a doctor recently. Occasionally, a claimant may simply be sent for a radiological exam (like an X-ray), but even then, these exams are usually quite short. Remember that while these doctors are accustomed to evaluating disability applicants, they will not be looking to treat any of your ailments. These exams aren’t as stressful as they seem, but your best chance of winning your disability claim is to assemble detailed medical records before submitting your application. If you need help gathering all the necessary documentation for your claim or if your claim was denied, give our office a call immediately!
