be respectful of the history of the home, but we also used modern finishes and amenities and made the floor plan more livable.” In order to avoid the darkness of a below grade kitchen, she chose bright white finishes and reflective surfac- es. The counters are quartzite, which mimics the feel of mar- ble but is much more durable. The windows at ceiling height let in the sunlight. A powder room off the kitchen is covered in metallic floral wallpaper that is traditional, yet modern. The master suite includes a spa-style bath covered in Calacatta gold marble, which Newey chose to warm up the room. “I wanted it to feel very calm and clean, but also inviting. The gold tones in the marble really warm up the feel overall.” The fireplace is new, and non-functional. “There had been a fireplace there at some point, but that flue was closed up. We thought it added a nice architectural element.” The glass-enclosed shower seems to float in the room, and adds contemporary contrast to the marble and more tradi- tional fittings. The room also includes an undermount tub with a marble surround, and a custom, double sink vanity. “The couple really wanted to do everything right in this renovation. Once the structure was completed they chose the finest finishes, accessories, and furnishings.” ■
