Aloft London ExCeL is a select-service hotel that provides a refreshing alternative for guests. This four-star hotel comprises 10 storeys, 250 beds, bars, restaurants and leisure facilities, and is located at the main entrance to the newly extended ExCeL International Aloft London ExCel hotel. Fresh thinking for unique design. The biggest challenge presented itself in the shape of the building, which forms a wave (or ‘serpentine’) with a convex central spine flanked by two concave wings. As a result, there are no long, straight routes to follow for building services. We overcame this issue by using horizontal, as well as vertical distribution. Close collaboration As the first Aloft hotel in the UK, we also needed to adapt the hotel operator’s brief and align it to UK standards and building regulations. We managed to achieve this by closely working with the client and going through a series of brief interrogation meetings, where each point was reviewed. If deviations were required, we succeeded in finding an agreement. Thanks to energy saving measures included in the design and execution of the works, the building obtained a BREEAM Excellent rating. The overall result is an innovative, modern hotel with an excellent energy rating, in which guests feel comfortable and well taken care of. Convention Centre. Innovative solution
