What We Offer

We know from experience that the response to each client’s program is “unique”. There are some basic features that are prerequisites, such as technical and design competence, quality of documents, and meeting deadlines, but beyond those, each client has different drivers that are critical to their program’s success, and those drivers can shift as the program progresses. We are committed to our clients’ success and understand the importance of a Grand Opening, possession dates, and all project milestones. Getting a project open on time and within budget is top of mind with everything we do.

Design Approach & Methodology

SGA Design Group has excelled at providing architectural services for thousands of projects over the past 27 years. We pride ourselves on not only the raw number of clients to whom we’ve provided services, but the number of years spent working alongside these clients. Our firm is built on relationships, some of which go back decades. Simply stated, our philosophy is to identify and remove as many obstacles as we can so our clients can open their doors as quickly and economically as possible.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Clarity of Purpose Our goal will be to help you open and/or remodel locations as economically as possible and according to the defined schedule. Our purpose is to identify and serve the core needs of our clients.

Organization & Coordination

We believe planning is fundamental to success. Success, however, depends on the people put in place and their technical skill, ability, and willingness to succeed in the roles of the program. We understand that this kind of work requires a world-class dedicated team to navigate the complexities of varying issues while managing schedules and expectations.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Communication At All Levels

It’s a simple concept – but people make the difference in communication. We are big believers in frequent communication to avoid surprises and to reinforce accountability to and for all stakeholders. Whether it pertains to quality, schedules, consultants, jurisdictions, or contractors, proactive and consistent communication at all levels internally within our team and externally with your team is our charge.

We work hard to practice a sundown rule – meaning we make every effort to respond to all communication before the close of each day, even if the resolution is pending.

Defined Schedule

Our approach to scheduling is simple – be as efficient as possible to do the work right the first time. We take every opportunity to shorten the time it takes from project authorization to permit approval, without compromising quality or service. We know that “yesterday” is sometimes not soon enough, and we’re willing and able to go above and beyond to help our clients execute on speed to market. Our teams regularly meet to discuss deadlines and workload, and we pull in additional resources when needed to meet our commitments. Establishing and communicating a defined schedule at the outset is important, and holding everyone on the team accountable to that schedule is imperative.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Cost Sensitivity &Time Control

As a professional services firm, we are spending your money. We absolutely understand what that means to your business in terms of real dollars and time. One of our underlying principles is to be good stewards of your money, and we are mindful of that with respect to our design and our process. Cost of special construction materials and sales days have an effect on the bottom line. We’ll work with clients, contractors, and consultants to perform constructability reviews of documents. We also develop processes which eliminate time wasters and unnecessary expenses.

Quality

We recognize the importance placed on quality. The accuracy and completeness of our documents must be at a level that minimizes confusion and mistakes in the field. The quality of our service must be at a level that maximizes our client’s confidence and trust that we are looking out for their best interests. We understand that quality takes time, and errors cost money. With these types of projects, information gathering is crucial, but even more important is the synthesis of that information to achieve the desired results. Each project will undergo a thorough quality control review at multiple levels. From the CAD technician to the Principal-in-Charge, each member of the team is tasked with checking their own work.

Prior to completion, construction documents are thoroughly reviewed by a senior member of our team who is charged with ensuring details are coordinated, code requirements have been integrated, and client expectations have been met.

Bridgestone Firestone SGA’s relationship with BSRO began in 2012. Initially providing construction observation services, SGA took on a role as the owner’s representative and traveled across the country during construction of new ground-up buildings. SGA reported on conformance with the construction documents and quality standards expected by BSRO. SGA was invited to develop prototype documents for various configurations of the typical BSRO buildings and brands. Our team continues to manage those prototype documents today. SGA has also been engaged by BSRO to provide design and construction document services for their self-developed and build-to-suit projects at 185+ locations across the country.

Casey’s SGA’s first projects with Casey’s were assigned in 2014. To date, we have completed contract documents on 309 new stores, remodels, and second-generation projects. Our work experience with Casey’s started out locally and has since expanded to throughout this retailer’s multiple state building program and SGA’s provision of prototype development support. Starting with a simple Casey’s floor plan, our job was to develop the complete prototypical construction document set based on other similar prototypes. Throughout our site-adapt and prototype assignments, SGA has identified and helped resolve building code and accessibility issues

Walmart SGA’s involvement with Walmart began in 1997. The services we provide to Walmart have grown over the past several years and now includes site-adaptation for ground- up 180,000-square-foot Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets, and expansions, take-overs, remodels, and prototype development and maintenance comprising more than 1,000 projects. In recent years, SGA has helped lead the charge to establish and guide Walmart’s BIM execution plan. SGA began developing the Grocery Pick-Up prototype and started producing “special projects” to enhance existing Walmart stores including adding professional service outlets, restaurants, and gas stations. This has expanded to include working directly with them and a supplier on artificial intelligence driven distribution facilities.

In 2016, ALDI launched a major new store and existing store construction program, and this grocery store retailer now ranks (along with SGA’s other two clients, Walmart and Amazon), as one of the top four retailers in the world. SGA began working with four of ALDI’s regional divisions in 2016. Aldi’s goal was to build new stores and significantly renovate and, when possible, expand the size of their existing stores as quickly as possible. SGA has completed services on 300+ projects including ground-up, second generation projects and we’re working on another 200+ projects in various stages of design and construction. Due to our early success in the program, we are now providing design and construction services from the initial four divisions to seven ALDI divisions. ALDI

Sam’s Club For Sam’s Club, SGA has completed 106+ projects including ground-up stores, additions, expansions, and remodels. Many of these projects include both a Sam’s Club and a Walmart Supercenter. Our services include entitlement, special elevation architectural design, and permitting.

Burlington SGA has been involved in Burlington’s building program for many years. Our first assignments included site surveys of existing buildings and then expanded into this retailer’s remodel program. In 2019, SGA developed an efficient, lean prototype for Burlington to help streamline the production process and we are now involved in working with developers on ground-up locations.

Hobby Lobby 2010 marked the start of a great relationship between SGA and Hobby Lobby that continues to this day. To date, we have completed work on 55+ ground-up stores, three remodels, 120+ second generation projects, and three expansions of existing stores located in 30+ states. Our work with Hobby Lobby has expanded from this store to include services for other Hobby Lobby brands including two Hemispheres furniture stores and one Mardel bookstore. Over the years SGA has built a close relationship with the Hobby Lobby Design and Development Department, helping them create prototype drawings and a fast-track process for design development and construction documents.

Kohl’s SGA’s relationship with Kohl’s Department Stores, Inc. started several decades ago. Since then, SGA has worked with this retailer on 475+ projects located throughout the nation including ground-up, second-generation and remodels as part of their national site adapt/multi-store rollout. SGA successfully updated and improved existing prototype documents and developed brand-new concepts. We also developed criteria prototype documents for the Kohl’s remodel program and led the store design migration from AutoCAD to Revit. When Kohl’s decided to pursue sustainability within their design and construction program, they turned to SGA to spearhead the effort to achieve USGBC LEED ® certification for their prototypes. Additionally, SGA provided design support for Kohl’s corporate data center expansion.
