The People’s Cup helps celebrate the 150th Ekka Experience history in the making when the iconic $1 million Lexus Melbourne Cup joins the spectacular 150th Ekka celebrations at the Brisbane Showgrounds. A Queensland institution, the Ekka has welcomed more than 35 million people through the gates since the first show 150 years ago. The Cup’s profound 165-year legacy forms part of the nation’s psyche – celebrated by racing and non-racing fans alike. The race doesn’t just ‘stop the nation’ – its rich history and cultural significance have made it a cornerstone of the Australian identity. It is a source of national pride and a symbol of the great Aussie spirit. The Melbourne Cup’s journey to the Ekka in this milestone year, commemorates the remarkable history and traditions of both events and their enduring connections within their communities. To celebrate the arrival of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour at the Ekka, the following special activities are planned: On Monday 10 August the showgrounds will come alive for Ekka’s Thoroughbred and Standardbred Day presented by Queensland Off The Track, one of the most glamorous days on the Ekka schedule where the two versatile racing breeds compete for the sought-after Champion of their Breed Title. Ekka visitors will have the opportunity to get up close to the Cup for a photo while on display and it will also feature alongside winning horses from 10.30am and 12pm in the Main Arena. On Tuesday 11 August the Melbourne Cup will be on display in Gourmet Plaza from 12pm with a Q&A discussion with Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michael Rodd on the Gourmet Plaza Stage from 12.30pm. On People’s Day (Wednesday 12 August), the People’s Cup will enjoy a ceremonial entrance into the Main Arena from 1.30pm and will feature in the Grand Parade. The RNA is incredibly honoured to welcome the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour to the Royal Queensland Show presented by the Bank of Queensland (BOQ) in 2026, which is 150 years in the making.
