‘slice’ of the action with these new categories added to the 2024 Royal Queensland Show competition. There is a spook-tacular opportunity to get creative with Halloween-Style Pumpkin being the 2024 Cake Decorating Theme. Also new to the schedule is a new Buttercream class in the Cake Decorating Competition. This year the flavours of the Sunshine State will be bottled up with ABC Radio Brisbane’s Queensland in a Jar class. The competition will focus on finding the state’s best preserve – be it relish, chutney or jam, just as long as the main ingredient is grown in Queensland. The classes will be judged at the ABC Broadcast Tent, located on the Ground Floor of the Royal International Convention Centre on Monday 12 August at 1.30pm. There will be prizes for first, second and third in the ABC Listeners’ Choice and similarly for Class 3 which is open to ABC staff who will be submitting their jam in a jar entry. The Natural Fibres Make & Model competition will be heading back to the 80s for the Senior School Class. Expect to see shoulder pads, bubble skirts and jumpsuits on display as entrants repurpose materials to make an outfit representing the fashion of the 1980s. Meanwhile the Queensland Ag Shows Adult Recycle and Re-Create class will be taking on a Goth theme in 2024. The sky is the limit for the Wearable Art Competition, with the 2024 theme being Your Imagination. In the Natural Fibres Make & Model and Wearable Art Competition, aspiring designers of all ages will showcase their latest creations which will be paraded on the Main Stage on Saturday 12 August at 3.30pm. This year in the Creative Art and Craft Competition, the Teddy Bears will now be joined by Furry Friends, with the category expanding to creations of both. Additional changes in 2024 include ceramics and pottery will be combined in the one competition and China Painting being rebranded as Porcelain Art. A record number of entries in Cake Decorating, Cookery, Creative Art and Craft, Painting and Drawing, Photography and Sculpture will be on display in the Channel 7 Pavilion from 9am to 7pm over the nine days of Show. In the Natural Fibres Make & Model and Wearable Art competitions, aspiring designers of all ages will showcase their latest creations. There are new 1970s fashion era and steam punk themes, plus the Adults in Wool class showcasing items made from 100 per cent wool fabrics. Teams of four (aged between 18 and 35) will battle it out on the Main Arena on Sunday 11 August from 4.30pm, rolling giant hay bales, constructing cattle cages, rolling up swags, treating pretend snake bites and more.
B Beef Cattle Main Arena and Silverdale Saleyards n Stud Beef n Led Steer n Prime Beef More than 1,200 head of beef cattle will be paraded, judged and displayed at the Show across the stud beef and led steer sections. The Stud Beef Competition is the largest showing of stud beef in the southern hemisphere. The prime beef section is being held at Silverdale Saleyards on Thursday 8 August. The Ekka’s Premier Beef Presentation (led steer and prime beef awards) will be held on Saturday 10 August in the Channel 7 Pavilion at 8am. Gary Noller (RNA Councillor in Charge) T 0408 700 949 Bush Poetry Stockman’s Rest and virtually Aspiring and experienced bush poets will showcase their favourite ballads, be it established or original poetry – just as long as the theme is about Australia, Australians or the Australian way of life. Once again, there is a class based on the theme of caravanning. School students also enter the competition, with bush poetry a great way for English students to develop their poetry and performing skills. The poets will perform for the judges at Stockman’s Rest on the morning of Sunday 11 August. For those who can't make it in person, there are also two virtual classes (open and 18 years and under) where poets submit a recording of themselves. Judging of the virtual competition takes place on Wednesday 17 July. David Fagan (RNA Councillor in Charge) T 0413 080 931 C Canine Competition presented by Sushi Hub Sushi Hub Dog Pavilion and Stockman’s Rest Tails will be wagging in the Sushi Hub Dog Pavilion as some 2,200 dogs participate in the 2024 Canine Competition. Over the nine days of Show around 180 breeds will be showcased before six international judges in one of the Ekka’s largest and most popular competitions. The Canine Scent Work Trials presented by Mitsubishi, where canines take on the role of a working detection dog to sniff out different odours, returns in 2024 and will be held at Stockman’s Rest on Wednesday 14 August at 10am. Other exciting competitions held at Stockman’s Rest include obedience (Saturday 10 August at 10am) and agility and jumping (Monday 12 August at 10am), with the dogs weaving through obstacles and jumping to great heights.
