enabling them in th e easiest m anner to verify every statem en t made by him, if they wished. And to th e best of his ability he has for years seen to it th a t no scholar whom surely these things specially concern rem ain in ignorance of th e facts h ere recounted, and of hun dreds of like cogency. A notable exception to th e above is a lawyer of standing, whose books on Law are deemed as of au tho rity . He had intelligence enough and candor w ithal to confess th a t th e case for the Bible as made out by th e w riter is im pregnable, th a t th e Bible is th u s proved to be an “ absolutely unique book.” This much th e case itself extorts from the bu t too well equipped w riter on— Evi dence; and accordingly he henceforth reads the w rite r’s Numerics w ith in tense appreciation. And then, fresh from th is confession, he betakes him self once more to th e circulation of his anti-C hristian books in th e w riting of which he joys to spend his leisure hours. A BEAL “MODERN” PRAYER Rabbi Browne of New York was invited some tim e ago, in th e absence of the reg u lar Senate chaplain, to offer prayer. This is the resu lt as printed in th e “Congressional R ecord” : “ Our F ath e r Who a rt in heaven, on ea rth and all over the universe, h al lowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom has come w ith th e dawn of creation and being established upon principles eter nal and universal, its laws enforce them selves alike in all climes and in all ages, wherefore Thy will m ust be done among the celestial in heaven even as it is amongst Thy m ortal sons on earth . TESTING NEW MOVEMENTS New movements and cu rren ts are sweeping the world a t th is time, both in th e church and ou t of it, most of which have some ostensibily good object as th e ir goal. Have you observed how quickly th e men and women of your church who are least sp iritu al tak e a stand in favor of these things? Let the clerk or pastor bring th e m a tte r before meeting for discussion and see in a moment how en thu siastic certain peo ple are who never, or seldom, have a testim ony for God; and the sp iritu al ones slowly follow, or silently acquiesce or are non-comm ittal. The sp iritu al ones dislike to oppose a th ing ostensibly intended for good, b u t they do not get en thu siastic abou t it. I t is one of the S p irit’s signs to H is discerning people. I t is easy for Satan to sub stitu te his program of works and good deeds, and keep these Christians very busy w ith things, which, while good in them selves, are either no t th e kind of work God has appointed th e church, or th e work He is no t a t th e tim e leading to. No m a tte r how good th e work, if the enemy succeeds in getting th e Christian to fall in w ith popular righteousness, he has gained his end— he has gotten th e Christian away from the leading of th e Holy Ghost, and will destroy him in his season.— F riend s Minister. KEEPING GOD WAITING A m other was about to h ear her little g irl’s prayers when a neighbor called. They talk ed a t th e fron t door several m inutes. The little girl a t th e sta ir way called ou t “Mamma, a re n ’t you ashamed to keep God w aiting so long?”
