THE FIRST TEXT BOOK It is stated on high au tho rity th a t th e Bible was th e first textbook ever used in American public schools, and was in fact, th e only book in th e early colonial schools, and was used for speller and reader, and from it was ta u g h t th e alphabet. B u t today th e Bible is th e la st book to be retained in th e public schools. And in many it is frozen ou t altogether. III. The Outcome—

In troduction— The home coming of a young man who has entered th e m in­ istry, and is invited to occupy th e home pulpit. Such was the coming of Jesus to N azareth a t th is time. v. 16. I. His P rep aration— 1— His study of th e Word,— “ found th e place,” etc., v. 17. He had sa tu ra te d him self w ith th e Scrip­ tu res, and was never embarrassed because o f inability to find w hat He wanted, or because He lacked m aterial to preach. Mark 2:2. 2— He was anointed by th e Spirit,— ch. 3 :22 ; v. 18-a. Even Christ needed th e anointing of th e Holy Spirit for His m inistry. How much more do we? 3— He was tested by Satan,— ch.
