AUGUST 12, 1923 MARTHA AND MARY Golden Text: "Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her." Lu. 10 : 42. LESSON TEXT L u. 10:38-4 2; Mk. 14 :3-9. (Read Pr. 31:10-31.) Introduction : so close to the heart of Christ? Were there any other homes that would have been glad to receive Him who had not where to lay His head? Are there homes now where He is always welcome, and other homes where His presence would bring a kind of chill upon the home life? We have heard of homes where a plate and a chair were always reserved for Him.

To combine these three passages of Scripture for study necessitates givin::; three views of Mary-once as a stu– dent, once as a suppli- LESSON cant and once as a spiritual worshipper, with Martha in con– trast. We have adopt– ed this plan and will see Mary thus portrayed. (1) MARY, THE STUDENT, Luke 10: 38-42. "Mary, • • • sat at Jesus' feet, and heard His word." v. 39. The scene is in the home of Mary and Martha and Lazarus. Martha was evi– dently the elder and the housekeeper. The sisters are the hostesses of our Lord. Wouldn't it be Interesting to know how It all came about? Why was this our Lord's favorite home? How did these sisters and Lazarus come EXPOSITION T. C. Horton

Martha and Mary a re types of be– lievers. Both loved Jesus; both w~re glad to entertain Him. Martha was anxious to prepare a good repast for Him. She was doing J. work which must be done, but she is cumbered about It. The word means ''distracted in her service." There is a natural suggestion, too, that she was a little jealous of Mary, who was sitting at His feet and getting a message from Him. Can you not see her, flushed with her work, coming into the room antl re· senting the sight of Mary sittin~ quiet– ly, drinking in the words of Him who spake as never man spake? Martha Is a little "peeved" even at the Master. Listen to her: "Dost r,hou not care?" Of course He cares. When the disciples were anxious about the
