Dear Friends, Welcome! It is a pleasure to host the sale with our good friends Ken, Zita, Kirk and Lisa Duensing at our Bull Development Center north of Blue Rapids. Our family has been raising Herefords since 1937 and our breeding program has always been to produce efficient, productive cattle that will excel in the pasture and feedlot. We do like that package to be phenotypically eye appealing. We believe you can have it all — cattle with the numbers the industry is looking for and the look that can excel in the showring. We strive to produce easy-keeping, deep-bodied females that will raise the next herd bull for our customers’ programs. As you will note on the sale bulls’ names there are several with the grandkids’ prefixes — this proves show heifers can produce bulls that will work in the real world. Our goal is to raise cattle that are structurally sound, graze our native pastures and utilize crop residue at least 10 months of the year, have a calf every year unassisted and wean at a respectable weight. We have an extensive AI program that includes heifers bred to low birth-weight bulls then cleaned up for 60 days. Plus 90% of our cow herd is AI bred to moderate birth weight and growth bulls with acceptable carcass numbers. We utilize proven bulls but we’re not afraid to sample a well-made young bull. There has never been a more exciting time to be raising cattle than right now. Our economy is hungry for beef and there’s no time like the present to grow and improve our cow herds and the offspring they produce. The Hereford bulls and heifers we have for this year’s sale are tremendous in type and kind and will help you to elevate your next calf crop both in pounds and quality. If you are looking at adding some docility to your herd, look no further as our bulls and heifers are “people friendly.” If you plan to retain more heifers this year there are several bulls designed for calving ease while still excelling in growth and carcass quality. We utilize genomic testing and this year more than 65% of the offering is homozygous polled. Much of the success of our program can be attributed to it simply being a family operation with everyone contributing their own unique talents. Our success would not be possible if it wasn’t for family. The bulls are fed using a bunkline delivery method. By making this switch several years ago, we can better observe bulls that may not be wanting to eat, as well as minimize those that may be over eating. We feel the bulls are much more consistent this year not only in their weight gain, but also in their condition. As you review the offering you will note we have denoted Dams of Distinction (DOD), Sires of Distinction (SOD) and CHB Sires (CHB) in the pedigree. We’ve also bolded all EPDs that are ranked in the top 15% of the Hereford breed. As you look through the offering, you will note that the average of our bulls and heifers is above breed average for the EPDs and indexes listed below. This year we again have a group of F1 females in our sale. Bull customers Bart and Dennis Thoreson are offering a nice group sired by Springhill Herefords bulls. Be sure to check them out on Page 28. The Alcove Angus Family invites you to our Annual Bull and Female Sale. This is our 28th annual bull sale and our 12th joint sale with Springhill Herefords. We are grateful for the support and advice we receive from them.
The animals will be available for viewing in the pens by 10 a.m. on the day of the sale. If you would like to view bulls or heifers prior to sale day, give us a call and we would be glad to meet you and answer any questions you may have. Bulls will be at the bull facility; heifers will be at the ranch until sale day. All Angus animals offered have had a Geneseek Angus GS test. The EPDs listed reflect the testing. They have been ultrasounded, pelvic scored, vaccinated, and BVD tested. They are guaranteed PI negative. All bulls have been semen checked. Ultrasound data and pelvic scores for the bulls and heifers will be available on the day of the sale. The ADG for all the Angus bulls was 3.14. Animals notated with the Targeting the Brand logo highlight the Angus with greater potential to produce calves meeting the most challenging specifications of the Certified Angus Beef brand. Over 70 percent of our bulls have this notation. But just don’t look at numbers, these animals have plenty of eye appeal also. Our goal is to present a diverse group of bulls so that you can find the animal you need — be it calving ease, growth, carcass merit or a combination. We stress good disposition in our cattle. They are used to us walking among them throughout the year, so they are accustomed to being around humans. Our grandchildren love to “check the cows” so they need to be docile. We have an extensive AI program with almost all our cows and heifers being AI’d before being turned out with clean-up bulls. In addition, we purchase embryos throughout the United States with the goal of improving our herd and offerings. This year there are two embryo bulls being offered. Twelve different sires are represented in this offering. We are also offering a group of open yearling heifers that would be a great addition to your herd. Take a look at them.
We attended the World Angus Forum and Tours in Australia in May 2025. Then went to New Zealand. Look for some pictures from our adventure throughout the bull pages. A memorable and informative trip.
