formed DCC as promised, and it truly will have a shot at the top positions as the holes mature and evolve, and more course raters play it. It should rise swiftly on World Rank- ing lists due to the esteem in which it is held internationally. DCC is a place of pilgrimage for overseas raters. If in- ternational raters were to have a say in these local rankings, DCC would be No 1 in no time at all. In 2023, DCC was at an all-time low of No 24 in the rankings. Prior to the 2022 Durban floods the course had become tired and dated, neglected, scruffy and a pushover for better golfers. The flooding damaged the course and wrecked infra- structure, and ultimately the natural ca- lamity proved to be its saviour because it couldn’t be left as it was. Without the floods, would anyone at the club have invested so generously in its future, as businessman and member Nick Jons- son has so courageously done. DCC has emerged from its upgrade not just a far better layout, with shapely new greens and bent grass surfaces, but also one more Aesthetically pleasing. Stripping away vast swathes of tropi- cal bush to expose dunes and hand- some trees, and open long concealed vistas between holes, has been the true reformation of this iconic course. The 102-year-old club too has gone through seismic changes, where old traditions and the value of playing 18 at a premier destination have been restored. Now that the club has gone from public ac- cess to private, it has become a more sought-after place to play.
