EALING CROQUET CLUB ADD NEW WEATHERVANE TO THEIR REFURBISHED PAVILION

By David Graham

Ealing Croquet Club has just completed the first phase of its pavilion refurbishment, seen here as a backdrop to the Golf Croquet B‐D Level Series Tournament held at the club in June. The work included installing a new croquet themed weathervane designed by club member and re7red architect, David Graham, and sponsored by another club member, Chris7ne Mason (pictured). The weathervane sports a rabbit playing croquet, a reference to the rabbit run name given to the space inside the hoop. The compass points feature the primary coloured balls in their order of play: Blue / South represents day7me, Red / West is sunset, Black / North is night‐7me and Yellow / East is sunrise. The weathervane was fabricated by a small family run business called Black Forge Art in Wi8ersham, Kent. It is made from stainless steel and powder coated, with hand painted roundels for the compass points. The photographs show its fabrica7on in progress. Chris7ne has a personal reason for sponsoring the weathervane in memory of her father, Les Mason (pictured), who served in the RAF Educa7onal Service during the Second World War and went on to teach Physics at the College of Technology and Art in High Wycombe. In his spare 7me he helped dig up the crashed remains of World War Two aircra' in the local area with the Chiltern Historical Aircra' Preserva7on Group. The exhibits were displayed in a small museum at Booker Airfield, where he was a volunteer. He was very resourceful and made a weathervane using part of a Spi6ire, on which he painted the roundel that would originally have been on the aircra'. It remained on the roof of his garage un7l its eventual demoli7on. Chris7ne regre8ed leaving the weathervane behind when the family house was sold, so decided to sponsor the club weathervane in his memory. The weathervane will be a landmark in Lammas Park, Ealing, and hopefully will be appreciated by everyone visi7ng the park, not just by the croquet playing members of the club and its visitors.
