Elijah was a prophet. Prophets had told the people of the coming of Jesus. Both of these men had left this earth many years before, and here they were talking with Jesus! The disciples wanted to stay on this spot. Peter said quickly: “Let us make three tabernacles [buildings as shelters]; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.” But from the clouds came forth a voice, the voice of God, saying: “ This is my beloved Son: hear him.” Soon the glory and the two figures disappeared, and the disciples and the Lord Jesus went down from the mountain to walk among men again. But the memory of that glory stayed with them, and they began to understand who Jesus really was and what He had come to do.

But it should be noted that Luke makes no attempt to give the exact time as do Mat thew and Mark. Luke says it was “about” eight days. The only thing this supposed contradiction proves is that the Gospel ac counts were written independently. If they had been deliberately invented, certainly the inventors would have had too much sense to leave such apparent contradictions in the text. Furthermore, the presence of these two different numbers still existing in the Greek text of our New Testament is strong witness to the fidelity of the long line of copyists. Had these believing work men been less honest, this apparent difficul ty would have been wiped out long ago. Among the great textual editors, not one records a single variant reading in any manuscript in connection with these num bers in Mark, Matthew, or Luke. The original Greek "hex” and "octo” still stand today as silent witnesses to the trustworthi ness of the Gospel record. At night in Washington, D. C., one object dominates the scene. All about the Capitol building, batteries of searchlights have been hidden among the trees and on the roofs of the buildings, all hidden, all focused on one object—not the Hall of Representatives or the Senate building, not even upon the Hall of Justice. But far above, each contributing light shone upon the dome of the Capitol, that in all of America, in the nighttime, one thing might stand out, the dome of the Capitol. So the Holy Spirit focuses all His glory light on one Being.— Christ Life. Golden Text Illustration M ark 9:7

Object Lesson C lara C lock Object: An alarm clock with an illu minated dial. Lesson: How is this alarm clock differ Yes, you are right. Do you know what makes this clock visible in the dark? Dur ing the day, it drinks in the rays of light, and then it is ready to give out light when darkness comes. If you want to prove this, take a clock with an illuminated dial and at night hold it close to a bright electric light. Then turn off the light and see how much more brightly the clock shines than it did before. This clock reminds me of people so much that I am going to name it Clara. If you were to take Clara and put her in a dark room every day, and not allow her to have any light, it would not be long until she would stop shining. This clock reminds me of the disciples who went up on the mountain with the Lord Jesus and saw Him transfigured. Jesus took them from the mountain of vision down to the valley of service. It was not enough for them to behold His glory; they must go with Him to those in need. The disciples never forgot the vision which they received on the mountain, and they spent their lives in going into the dark world and telling the unsaved of Christ and His power to save. I told you that Clara Clock must each day drink in the rays of light, in order that she may be able to shine at night. Christians should remember that they daily must drink in Christ’s life and light in order that they may shine for Him in a dark world. Speaking of prayer to God, David said: “ They looked unto him, and were radiant” (Psa. 34:5, R. V .). ent from most alarm clocks? “ It has an illuminated dial.”

On a Mountain with Jesus M ark 9:2-10

Memory Verse: “A voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him” (Mk. 9:7). Approach: Today we are going back to the part of the story of the Lord Jesus that happened soon after Jesus was talk

ing with His disci ples about His death. Lesson Story: One day Jesus took Peter and James and John, the three disciples that were especially near to Him, up on a high mountain. The Bible tells us that when they were alone with Him on this

high mountain, suddenly the whole appear ance of Jesus changed. His face and His garments shone with a radiant, glorious beauty As the disciples looked, the figures oftwo men joined Jesus. They were Moses and Elijah. Now these were two men who had lived many, many years before. Moses had brought God’s law to the people. The law showed people what was right and what was wrong to do. Because every one sins, no one has ever been able to keep the law perfectly. It was because people break the law that the Lord Jesus came to die for them and to save them from punishment.
