REMEMBER RUSSIA A great white nation is perishing. The sufferings of Christians in Soviet Russia are indescribable. And yet— they are members of the same body of Christ to which we belong. Do their sufferings mean nothing to us? Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? The Russian Missionary Society is doing its ut most for those who sit in the shadow of death. Many thousands of dollars for support of mis sionaries and for relief and for orphans have been sent by us into Soviet Russia and its border states. No time must be lost, if we really have at heart the Lord’s cause on the far-flung Russian Mission Field. Please pray earnestly, and then—Whatsoever He tells you to do, do it with all your might. Gifts for relief, or missionaries, or orphans can be addressed to RUSSIAN MISSIONARY SOCIETY, Inc. M. N. Fetler,. Secretary 1844 W . Monroe Street Chicago, III.

and power of Christ in our lives is our only assurance of success in the proclama tion of the gospel. A heart love for Christ will express itself in love for our fellows and in a de sire for their eternal welfare. It is this motive which prompts us to dare anything for the transmission of the good news of salvation through His blood. He says to us in John 15:12: ¿‘‘This is my command ment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.” Can we love as the Lord Jesus loves? In our own human strength this kind of love is an utter impossibility, but we can “ do all things through Christ” who strengthens us in the inner heart to do His will. Divine love and love that is merely human differ not only in degree, but also in kind. Divine love is a supernatural love, accomplished by God’s grace and power in our hearts. Shall we not com pletely yield our wills to Him, that He may live His supernatural life through us, His weak earthen vessels? Raymond Lull, the medieval missionary, had been a brilliant student in the Uni versity of Montpelier. Later he became a professor there. He turned his back on his splendid prospects and flung his life on the Mohammedan world in the period when to preach Christ was to court death. A year and a half he was imprisoned in a dungeon. Tw ice he was banished from the shores of North Ajfrica. When he was over eighty and was on his way to preach Christ to the Mohammedans of North Africa, he exclaimed: “As a hungry man makes despatch and takes large morsels on account of his great hunger, so Thy servant feels a great desire to die that he may glorify Thee. He hurries day and night to complete his work in order that he may give up his blood and his tears to be shed for Thee.” A t last, taken beyond the wall, he was stoned to death. As the stones were fall ing upon him, before he became uncon scious, he said, “ He that loves not, lives not, and he that lives by the Life never dies.”— S elected . Helps for the Leader I. APRIL 3, 1938 CENTRAL IDEAS IN JESUS’ TEACHING M atthew 5:43-48; 6:33; 28:18-20; L uke 6:31 Meditation on the Lesson From the lips of our Lord Jesus Christ issued the supreme teaching of all ages; He stands as the Great Teacher. However, in considering the principles which He taught, we must be aware of the danger which today is alarmingly prevalent among true believers as well as nominal Christians. In many circles the ethical and moral declarations of Christ have been magnified above His person and His work on the cross, thus detracting from the very purpose for which He came into the world. He came primarily to give His life as a ransom for many (Matt. 20:28). While here, He showed men how to live on a higher-than-human plane in this present world, but He explicitly pointed out that they could do this only by living on the resurrection side of Calvary with Him (John 14:20, 21; cf. 15:4, 5). If we were to condense the root teach ing contained in our Scripture passages into one word, we could say that “ love” would be the all-embracing term. Love— divine love— is the theme, which with many varia tions, runs through all the Gospels and Epistles. When, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ enunciated those start ling commandments of “Love your enem ies,” and “Bless them that curse you,” He set forth a new order of thinking and action. The legalistic spirit of retaliation had been the criterion in human relation ships previous to this, although the gospel in embryonic form can be seen in the Old Testament ceremonies. Christ came to ful fill the law and the prophets, and to inter pret their meaning to a sin-dazed world. As one has neatly phrased His mission, “ The best commentary on these matchless counsels is the bright example of Him who gave them.” A mark of a true disciple is the resembling of Christ in His attitude toward His enemies. All men have been alienated from fellowship with God by virtue of sin, and restoration through the substitutionary death of Christ should re sult in a Christllkeness in practical conduct. Another salient command of the Lord was that glorious commission: “ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” W e are to transmit the message of salvation and service which He has given us; we are saved to be His witnesses to the uttermost part of the earth. With the command He also gives us the secret—the only secret—of victory: “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” The conquering presence
