told His sufferings on the cross. He said to them: “ Thus it is written, and thus it behooved. Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead 'the third day”’ Having completed His purpose, He then gave to His disciples their commission to go to proclaim the tidings of victory where the message of defeat had been heralded a little while before. Because of His vic tory over sin and death, He could tell them that “ repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Then He added: “And ye are witnesses of these things.” Knowledge of the salvation which Christ gives always involves the responsi bility of telling the story to others. Satan thought he had triumphed when, on the blackest day in history, the Son of God hung on Calvary’s tree. The devil’s instruments, the Pharisees and other Jewish and Gentile leaders, believed that they had succeeded in doing away with Jesus Christ, whose very life and deeds had convicted them of sin. They were willfully blind, and they did not see that Calvary was the meeting place of righteousness and judg ment, of mercy and truth, of God’s holi ness and man’s sin. They did not acknowl edge in faith that “ God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself” (2 Cor. 5:19). The cross is the symbol of the eternal triumph of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Sa viour of those who will accept Him and place their trust and faith in Him. With Paul we can joyfully cry out: “ O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? . . . Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 15:55, 57). It is said that Napoleon Bonaparte once called his officers together and spread be fore them a large map of the world. He placed his finger upon a spot on the map that was colored red. It was the British Isles. Napoleon said to his officers: “ Gen tlemen, if it were not for that red spot, I could conquer the world!’’ Now, there is a mightier conqueror than Napoleon ever was, one who is also a greater tyrant. He is known to every faithful Christian. He is none other than Satan. W e can see Satan calling his army together, and plac ing the map of the world before it. We can see him also put his finger on a red spot— a hill near Jerusalem— and hear him say to his official legions: “ If it were not for this Red Sppt (Calvary), I could con quer the universe I”—Louis S. B a u m a n . II. T he E m pty V ase Renan scoffingly said, “ Christians live on the fragrance of an empty vase.” Aye, and in a truer sense than ever the witty skeptic dreamed. Such an empty vase is that vacant tomb in Joseph’s garden, and Christians have not ceased to live on its living, unchanging fragrance.— S e le c t e d . And of that shouting multitude I feel that I am one; And in that din of voices rude I recognize my own. I see the scourges tear His back; I see the piercing crown; And of that crowd who smite and mock I feel that I am one. Yet not the less that blood avails, T o cleanse away my sin, And not the less that cross prevails T o give me peace within. — H oratius B onar . APRIL 17, 1938 VICTORY OUT OF DEFEAT M ark 10:45; L uke 9:22, 51; 24:38-47 Meditation on the Lesson When Jesus Christ cried out, “ It is fin ished” (John 19:30), and dismissed His spirit, after suffering for hours on the cross, it seemed to the unbelieving world that “ Defeat” was written large above Him. Even His own disciples were stunned by the blow which had come, for they had forgotten the words which He spoke while He was yet with them on the earth. Christ had told them of these events: “ The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day” (Lk. 9:22). The disciples had forgotten the last clause; it seemed to them that His death ended all. They had for gotten that Calvary was the fulfillment of a purpose established before the foundation of the world “ for even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Mk. 10:45). A pathetic picture is that painted in Luke 24:38-47. The disciples were frightened that one whom they thought was a spirit should appear in their midst and say, “Peace be unto you.” They did not recog nize the Lord Jesus immediately. They were not expecting to see Him, for they had not grasped the truth of His predic tion that He actually would rise again the third day. He showed them His hands and His feet, nail-scarred, and convinced them that He was the same Jesus who had been crucified on the cross a few days before. Then He showed them the Old Testament Scriptures which clearly fore
