to carry them, we shall find that they in crease in weight. Let us tell our heavenly Father, “ I have no s t r e n g t h for this weight; I cannot carry the burden.” Our heavenly Father is ready to do this for us; He has told us to roll all our cares on Him.— G eorge M uller . APRIL 14 Not Martyrdom "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree” (1 Pet. 2:24). The cross of Jesus is the revelation of God’s judgment on sin. Never tolerate the idea of martyrdom about the cross of Jesus Christ. The cross was a superb triumph in which the foundations of hell were shaken. There is nothing more certain in Time and Eternity than what Jesus Christ did on the cross; He switched the whole of the human race back into a right relation ship with God. He put the basis of hu man life on redemption, that is, He made a way for every son of man to get into com munion with God. The cross did not hap pen to Jesus: He came on purpose for it. The cross is the center of Time and of Eternity, the answer to the enigmas of both.— O swald C ham bers . APRIL 15 A Perfect Name "Thou shalt call his name Jesus” (Matt. 1 : 21 ). Jesus I How does -the very word overflow with sweetness, and light, and love, and life; filling the air with odors, like pre cious ointment poured forth; irradiating the mind with a glory of truths on which no fear can live; soothing the wounds of the heart with a balm that turns the sharpest anguish into delicious p e a c e , shedding through the soul a cordial of immortal strength. Jesus! The answer to all our doubts, the spring of all our courage, the earnest of all our hopes, the charm omni potent against all our foes, the remedy for all weakness, the supply of all our wants, the fullness of all our desires. — G eorge W . B eth u ne . "Thanks be unto God, who leads me on from place to place in the train of his tri umph, to celebrate his victory over the enemies of Chris?’ (2 Cor. 2:14, Cony- beare). Are you convinced that the W o r d promises full victory to e v e r y believer ? Having known the healing touch of the Good Samaritan upon your sin wounds, you will know that that blessed Benefactor will never leave you to your own resources for the remainder of the journey. When you have been delivered from the horrible pit of sin, it never is God’s will that you should periodically wander back into its dark domain and stodgy atmosphere. The Saviour is more than a guarantor of safety from hell and sin’s penalty. He is sufficiently strong to keep you from sin’s dominion day by day.— C a pta in R eginald W allis in The New Life. or with a team . . . How great a thing it is to fit into God’s everlasting scheme of things, to know that one is in the way of His will, to be sure that one is fulfilling his vocation!—W . G rah am S croggie . APRIL 12 His Faith in Us "I live by the faith of the Son of God” (Gal. 2:20). Faith is the almighty power of God moving and working in the believer’s soul. There is therefore no such thing as “ weak” faith: but we read of gtceat and little faith. Faith is independent of circumstances, fa vorable or adverse. It cannot be touched by fire or water, panic or opposition. The more the believer is defeated, the more his faith triumphs and makes him more than a conqueror. True faith works the most freely in the face of the greatest difficulties. Gideon’s nothingness was his might; and in Paul’s weakness was his Lord’s strength made perfect.— W illiam W ile m a n . "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Phil. 4:6). It is not simply great matters that we are to bring before God, nor simply small things, but “ every thing.” . . . Life is made up of little things. If we attempt to stand in our own strength under little trials, we shall fall, which is dishonoring to God. We have not a particle of strength to carry any burdens, little or great; therefore we must bring them all to God. If we attempt APRIL 13 Taking Everything to God
