with God through our Lord Jesus Christ’ (Rom. 5:1). Instead of worrying, we are told what we are to do. Tell God all about it. Have you never found relief when you could tell a friend what you were p a s s i n g through? Well, God invites you to make a friend of Him. He can be better than any earthly friend, for many reasons. He is never weighted with care Himself, and our earthly friends often are. He is always at hand, and earthly friends cannot be. He is always ready to listen, and can im part to us His own peace, which others cannot do. Moreover, we can tell to Him what we could not breathe into any human ear.—R ussell E lliott . APRIL 24 A Costly Virtue ' “ The meekness and gentleness of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:1). “ The fruit of the Spirit is . . . gentle ness” (Gal. 5:22). “ Gentleness” seems to be chiefly a “ fruit of the lips” and manner flowing from the long-suffering of the heart; while “ long- suffering” means having just cause for anger, yet not being angry. Gentleness comes in as a gracious adjunct, or as a smaller fruit of the same species. Gentle ness will check the hasty word and sub stitute a soft one; gentleness will smooth over a thousand tiny crookednesses. Gentle ness is one of the mightiest powers for daily life and all its little worries. It is a sort of long-suffering when we might justly be annoyed and disappointed, but not justly angry with another. Paul says, “But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children” (1 Thess. 2:7).— G. M. T aylor . APRIL 25 Positive Faith “ What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mk. 11:24). “ Amen” means not “so may it be,” but, “ so it certainly shall be.” For “ amen” is not a prayer; it is an affirmation of posi tive faith. The thing is coming. Then you go off from your knees, around the house, and say to yourself, “ That thing is settled. He is coming, it is coming, that is coming.” And if you knew that some things you are praying for were coming, would you sing? I think the service of song, in the major key, would flood the house, and threaten the integrity of the roof sometimes. That is faith. — S. D. G ordon . APRIL 26 Trusting Him Wholly "Have faith in God” (Mk. 11:22). Today it is your happy privilege to prove, as never before, your loyal confi dence in Jesus, by starting out with Him on a life and walk of faith, lived, mo ment by moment, in absolute and childlike trust in Him. . . . Take your stand on the power and trustworthiness of your God, and see how quickly all difficulties will vanish before a steadfast determination to believe. Trust in the dark, trust in the

APRIL 21 Fully Equipped

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him” (Col. 2:9, 10). The Greek word translated “complete,” when used of a soldier, means a man fully equipped, fully trained, fully directed for the battle. When used of a house it means every possible necessity met, all needed equipment in place, and each room fully furnished. When used of a ship it means one that is ready to leave port for a trip around the world. . . . Thus we, as the soldier prepared for warfare, as the ship fully equipped for the voyage around the world, are complete in the Lord Jesus, fully prepared for every possible eventuality in our Christian life until we, at last, reach our home with God. In Him are we com plete, lacking nothing for victory over sin and the devil in our life and service.Ss L. L. L egters in Union with Christ. APRIL 22 Practical Adjustments “ Where dwellest thou? . . . Come and see” (John 1:38, 39). Continual progress and perpetual growth are the principles of divine life in the soul and in the church, a progress and growth that are ever from within, and reach a constantly widening circle without. First the heart must be put right, then the life set in order; first the soul saved, then the body serving. Moreover, in the outward life of the Christian, growth will be most readily seen in the greater number of de tails which come under the direct influence of God.—H ubert B rooke .
