life for my sake shall find it.” The water of life this humble shepherd dug deep to reach has been preserved for us in the Psalms. Since he brought it to the surface, millions have re freshed their souls with its satisfying goodness. “ The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” How many have read these words and been blessed! Here, too, in these sands are foot prints that will lead us to the rich rewards of godly leadership. Hezekiah saw his generation in a- right light. Unlike many people who see history only in retrospect, he accurately ana lyzed the nation’s ills at close range. He restored the divine worship, put the temple in usable condition, and started a teaching missionary move ment. God preserved him, answered his prayers, and extended his life during a deathly sickness. The visible imprint of his feet has been left for us to follow. Of him and those who walk in his steps can it be said, “ Blessed are ye that sow beside all waters” (Isa. 32:20). Ezekiel, Daniel, and Jeremiah have each left straight paths with no ques tionable sideroads leading to the shadows. They preached God’s Word out of a full heart with utter disre gard to personal danger. Under the most trying conditions, Ezekiel ministered to the captives by the river Chebar. But his God-given message of warning and rebuke to the people never changed. Daniel, through personal discipline and prayer, kept his heart loyal to God in the king’s palace. He kept his garments clean in the midst of drunk enness, revelry, and debauchery. Jeremiah sounded out his message of judgment in Jerusalem during a time of military siege. Bearing the taunts of traitor, spy, and pessimist, he preached God’s Word till the ship of state collapsed. But God preserved him in the crash, while his tormentors felt the keen edge of the Babylonian sword. The lives of these men give meaning to the verse, “ He is a buckler to all them that trust in him” (2 Sam. 22:31). In a larger way, nations have left tracks also. God dealt with them as units as He did with people as indiv iduals. The nation of Moab smashed itself against the jutting rocks of pride. The Amorites, Hittites, Jeb- usites and the other “ ites” of the land fell to pieces in the decomposing vats of their own filthiness. Sodom and Gomorrah have been left to our thinking as examples of the gangrenous results o f moral rot. T H E K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S

helpless Israelites with a heavy whip until the hot sands were red with their blood. In anguish, they cried out to God for deliverance. He heard that cry ! Soon the houses they were forced to build “ out of brick” made without straw crashed down upon Pharaoh’s head. But the slaves who built them slipped out of his hands through a secret door. They were led by the Lord to another land—“ a land flowing with milk and honey.” What a lesson for us in God’s delivering power in the most adverse circumstances! “He shall deliver the needy when he crieth” (Psa. 72:12). There are also group actions of the common people which reveal to us some things about public opinion. The tower of Babel the people built to pre serve themselves from being separated was the cause of their separation. Con fusion entered their plans and Scrip ture says, “ from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth” ’ (Gen. 11:9). The widespread violence in the days of Noah brought God on the scene in awful vengeance. The whole world perished in the drowning waters of judgment. The cries of Sodom, of the people for a king, the mocking of the messengers, the organized rebellion to return to Egypt—all these show that we cannot deify the common man and worship him. He is too often wrong. The stone that was “ cut out of the mountain without hands” ground to bits the common man as well as the wealthy and rulers. Too, Christ’s death for the whole world is conclu sive evidence that all men share a common guilt before God and need to be forgiven their sins. But there are footprints in the sand that lead to blessedness also. The youthful shepherd with the ruddy face, is still to this day leading God’s peo ple “ beside the still waters.” His victory over the lion' and the bear prepared him to lay low in the dust the blustering Goliath. By the same pattern he fought the battles of the Lord to a victorious finish. Never do we see David moved to action by the pressure of public opin ion. Never does he falter in the face of great odds when he is sure God directs. Nor is his love for the people ever replaced with exploitation. Con cern for the people motivated his ac tions. He “ served his own generation.” David has demonstrated what our Lord meant by, “ He that loseth his
