villages to obtain food. But Christ never sends men away from Himself for the supply of need. He himself supplies man’s need. And so it was to be demonstrated on this occasion. The Command of Christ vv. 37-41 “Give ye them to eat,” was Christ’s word to His disciples. The latter im mediately began to think of the re sources they had on hand and asked if they ought to take it (two hun dred pennyworth, or about $35.00) and buy bread. Then it was discov ered that a lad was present with a lunch composed of five loaves and two fishes. Thus, as far as the disciples and the multitude were concerned, there was inadequacy in the whole matter. But Jesus was there and that was enough. He had the multitude to sit down in orderly companies with rows in between so that they looked like flower beds. He who is the Bread o f Life thus fed all those who were present through the ministry of the disciples and the self-sacrifice of the little lad. We see in all of this how Christ himself is the supply of human need, but He works through human instruments. Every witness for Christ is expected to take the bread which He alone can supply and distribute it to the starving multitudes. The Abundance of the Supply vv. 42-44 When the feeding of the five thou sand (and more) was finished, there was more food left than when they began the meal. Twelve baskets full of fragments were gathered—one for each of the Twelve, possibly to im press upon them the ability of Christ to fulfill every need of man as they went forth to minister in His name. These baskets were doubtless part of the luggage taken by Jews when on a journey to carry the necessities of travel. And since John tells us (6 :4 ) that this was near to the Passover time it is likely that many of those present were traveling toward Jeru salem for that feast. At any rate, let us be reminded again by the “ twelve baskets full of the fragments” (v. 43) that there is no limit to the ability of Christ to minister to human need.
So it is today. God’s Son performs miracles for those who “ only believe.” He brings salvation to those who “ only believe.” He provides every need for His children when they “only believe.” Do you personally be long to this wonderful Saviour with whom all things are possible? Feb. 11, 1951 JESUS MEETS HUMAN NEED Mark 6:34-44 Pointers on the Lesson The context of this week’s lesson in dicates that it was an especially busy time in the ministry of Jesus and His disciples. The Twelve had just re turned from the mission upon which they had been sent in verses 7-13 (v. 30). There was such interest in the things which our Lord and His apostles were doing that they scarcely had time to eat (v. 31). At such a time Jesus suggested that a time of retirement in the desert was needed to recuperate their strength. And so they left Capernaum for the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee hoping there to find a bit of seclusion from the crowd, but such was not the case as v. 33 tells us, for the people “ out went them” and were on hand to meet them when they arrived. The Compassion of Jesus v. 34 One might think that Jesus would have been greatly irritated as He looked upon the crowd. It looked as though the purpose of the journey across the lake was to no avail. Jesus and His companions wanted release from the crowds, but here they were. And a most precious fact is here re vealed ! Instead of irritation there was compassion when Jesus looked upon that milling crowd. How is your heart affected as you look upon a great crowd of people ? The Lord who knows what is in the heart of every man could see the burdens, the sorrows, the sins, the need of every individual before Him. He saw them as helpless sheep that had no shepherd. In their need He began to minister unto them. May God give us hearts like His in relation to those to whom we minister! The Request of the Disciples w . 35, 36 Night was fast approaching. The people had nothing to eat. The disci ples faced the problem of what to do in this emergency. Their faith seems not to have reached to the point of confidence that Jesus would supply the need. Hence they suggested that Christ send the people away, to the
