The Northeast Florida STEM2 Hub been working to build upon the foundational work accomplished over the past year by expanding access in our region by scaling successful programs . We are continuing to work on our project, CLOSING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE . Working with our corporate partners who donate end of life computers, we are securing refreshed and refurbished computers so that at-risk students who do not have a computer are given a training class and access to resources, including school resources. We are pleased to say that we have distributed almost 1,000 computers to date . This year, our goal is to distribute 2,500 computers to students through private funding sources. We are committed to this project and are pleased that almost 1,000 children who do not have a computer now have one that they are able to use during these challenging times to continue their instruction and have access to their school resources. Integration of STEM + CS into the School Day in Alignment with Standards: Program Description Impact/Long Term Goals Robotics in the School Day Continue to work with elementary and middle school Media Specialists, STEM Teachers, and Technology Teachers to deepen content knowledge and use of robotics in their programs. Expand access to schools that are not currently participating. Provide training on resources that align with these programs while allowing for virtual learning opportunities to continue learning in an out of school setting, as needed. Add 10 School Media/STEM Centers 22,260 students

Hacking STEM through math/science and STEM Integration

Continue to work with district and school leaders across the region to build comprehensive pathways and professional development to incorporate hacking STEM into the curriculum with alignment to BEST Standards. This empowers teachers to use a set of tools that are aligned with the skills needed in the workforce. We will be providing teacher training, startup materials, and implementation support to expand the integration into middle and high school courses in math, science, and STEM courses to accelerate student experiences with computer science, data science, data streaming, and fundamentals of artificial intelligence. We will continue to work in coordination with the FLDOE to infuse into statewide CS and STEM professional learning.

Cybersecurity, Drones and High-Demand Career Pathways Expand Demonstration Schools

Build upon foundational work in robotics in elementary and middle schools, to infuse career-focused pathways and experiences, leading to interest in high-demand careers in cybersecurity, drones technologies, and artificial intelligence, while building foundational skills in computational thinking. This will set students up for success in high school as they engage in programs that support key industry certifications aligned to the revised state priorities and CAPE list. We will continue to work with industry partners for grounded workforce experiences through internships, corporate visits, events, speaking engagements, and mentorships. 20 Elem. 10 Middle Schools Continue to support existing demonstrations schools through targeted professional learning for teachers to integrate STEM into core content areas. Begin expansion of demonstration schools and capacity building through peer visits. Identify and develop new demonstration schools across the region. Open doors to districts outside the region for school visits. Continue to coordinate with colleges of education to develop preservice teachers ready to teach computer science, coding, robotics and STEM upon graduation for system capacity building. Add 5 Demonstration Schools 3, 710 students 8,500 students Increase participation in the Hour of Code, with a goal of 100% participation by schools in the region. Expand the number of teachers trained in computer science fundamentals to increase the number of students who are introduced to coding. Support the newly developed facilitators through a virtual platform to support the expansion of access to computer science across all of north Florida, especially rural areas. Increase the number of schools offering Computer Science Discoveries and Computer Science Principles (AP) by increasing the number of trained teachers and the number of sections available in each school. Expand participation of students in the Annual Computer Science Fair. Work in coordination with the FLDOE to infuse into statewide computer science initiatives to support state computer science goals. Goal: 4 Cohorts 6,000 Students

Complete study of student growth and proficiency in mathematics as aligned to the FSA and based on three years of archival data to validate program success (no cost to this project, but will ready us for statewide expansion in partnership with DOE, and other funding sources with interest in mathematics). This Summit had been fully planned for June, but has now been reschedule, tentatively, for Fall 2020, pending Health Conditions. Three days of professional learning for various stakeholder groups with a goal to foster cross-sector collaboration & commitment to talent development and deepened understanding of workforce needs. School and district leaders will hear from industry professionals about the critical skills needed in the workforce as aligned to cybersecurity careers. Content will be aligned to K12 Standards. Teacher learning tracks include elementary, middle school, high school, with sessions provided by NICERC, Woz Education, Microsoft, Florida Blue, Citi and more. Colleges of Education and Computer Science Faculty will also be invited. Immediate implementation in the 2020-21 school year. We launched Chief Science Officers in three school districts with 51 CSOs. We plan to expand to at least 250 CSOs in the coming school year, with statewide engagement. CSO develops student leaders who are the STEM career advocates at their school, and plan school and community STEM events, STEM clubs, advocacy, and student voice. Each CSO has an impact on the entire school community.

Expand opportunities for competitive cybersecurity programs in afterschool by building upon the work in the school day. In partnership with CyberPatriots, and other established curriculum providers, we will expand the number of cybersecurity competitive teams that are available in the region.

Competitive Robotics

Continue to provide support to existing teams and programs serving our most at risk students by working with partner organizations, including Communities in Schools, Police Athletic League, Boys & Girls Clubs, Girl Scouts, YMCA afterschool programs, and community organizations as well as continue to support 21 st Century CCLC Programs through our partner districts, and participate in the development of new programs. We will continue to provide professional learning to coaches serving students in underserved and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities; and expand the number of teams that we are working with, providing equipment, registration, training, support, and access to competitions. Career pathways with drones are rapidly expanding. This year we piloted a competitive drones program including 20 teams from partner organizations and multiple school districts. We will expand the competitive drones league by, at a minimum, doubling the number of teams and extend the reach across the region. The program supports autonomous functions through coding the drones as will as the development of manual flying skills. Foundational skills for industry certification are infused throughout. Deepened and expanded versions of the one-day workshops described above, including tracks in medical applications of technology, biomimicry, science misconceptions, physics & chemistry, website development, app development, Red Rover Robotics, coding, and Hacking STEM with social responsibility projects. All camps include age appropriate career exploration. We will continue to partner with organizations who are providing STEM and CS Events to facilitate sessions where students will be introduced to coding, computer science, careers, drone programming and flying, robotics programming, and experiences with mixed and virtual reality, data science, sensor building, and artificial intelligence experiences through coding Cosmo. Partner organizations included JaxPAL, TEDx Youth, Citi Tech Days, Boys & Girls Club, Jaguars STEM + Football Camps, School District STEM days, and university camps.

Evidence of the Development of a Talent Pipeline The Problem : There is a gap between the output of the K12 educational system and the needs of the workforce, especially in the areas of STEM and Computer Science. The Hypothesis : Starting a nonprofit with a mission to convene, inspire, and invest in the STEM2 field by providing the essential missing elements to accelerate the growth of STEM2 education and careers could bring about awareness and action to build a diverse talent pipeline from the early grades through college or career. The Progress Awareness: At the inception, there were no computer science courses available for elementary school students. The STEM2 Hub created awareness through the study of the State of STEM in the region, and the launch of the STEM2 Hub. Advocacy: Once the STEM2 Hub was launched and the problem was studied, the STEM2 Hub began to advocate to the local stakeholders in the school districts and communities who could make decisions to begin solving the problem through action. Action : Awareness was taken through the establishment of local and regional partnerships Code.org and FIRST Robotics. Cross sector stakeholder groups were convened, and perspectives were shared. Information was gathered and studied. The STEM2 Hub’s initial action plan was developed, based on the data collected. Activation: Across the region, over 1,100 teacher received training in Computer Science Fundamentals through the Code.org Regional Partnership, bringing exposure to students through Hour of Code. Robotics teams sprung up in pockets. Growth and scaling rapidly occurred.

Accountability: Advocacy turned to state level action as computer science standards were enforced through legislation requiring all secondary schools to provide access to computer science instruction. Adoption: While exposure and afterschool activation made great strides forward, there was a need to assure equitable access in the school day. The state course catalog was updated to include courses aligned with the need for Computer Science Education to become available for all learners in an elementary setting. The courses, Introduction to Computer Science I and II were adopted by the state board of education. Introduction to Computer Science I – A State Level Overview In elementary schools across the state, Introduction to Computer Science I is has been made available. There are approximately 1.2 million elementary school students in the state of Florida. Only 214,000 students, or 17% percent of elementary school students are presently enrolled in this course. Introduction to Computer Science

– Northeast Florida Overview Of the total enrollment in the 67 Florida School districts, 78,734 students (37% of the 20%) who are enrolled in the course go to school in the Northeast Florida STEM2 Hub Region. These students are our emerging talent pipeline. With our continued focus and support, we can assure there are pathways available leading all learner to be aware of and prepared for the high-wage, high-demand careers for the future of work! Further, in NEFL, St. Johns County SD is already offering Introduction to Computer Science 2 with nearly 1,000 students enrolled.

Acceleration: Next STEPS within NEFL & Beyond… Expansion efforts are underway to replicate and scale the STEM2 work across the region and with expansion to rural reaches of north Florida. In a national pilot, Code Hub.org expanded the number of district level facilitators of Computer Science Fundamental to rural panhandle districts.
