When armed with student data and varied instructional approaches, teachers can effectively differentiate instruction. In this session participants will explore the purpose behind different small-group models. Learning outcomes: • Identify students’ strengths and needs • Describe the purpose behind various small-group reading models • Explain the roles that grade-level texts, decodable texts, and choice texts play in instruction • Use knowledge of texts and small-group instructional models to plan a student-centered small-group lesson sequence

Let’s answer the burning question that so many teachers ask as they begin their guided reading instruction: what should the other students be doing? This session explores how independent literacy workstations serve as a natural extension of learning during whole- and small-group literacy instruction. We’ll workshop a variety of resources and strategies to help you establish meaningful and accountable workstations in your classrooms. Learning outcomes: • List the criteria for an effective literacy workstation • Plan literacy workstations that extend learning and support independent practice • Assess student learning in literacy workstations • Manage literacy workstations with scheduling, grouping, and consistent procedures • Create a 20-day plan to gradually prepare students to work independently
