Session 2: The Cultivated Classroom: High-Yield Literacy Strategies (Part 1) During this session participants will discover the power of high-yield literacy strategies in the secondary classroom. Teachers will learn how to introduce and encourage these strategies with their students as they work both independently and collaboratively. This session will dive into improving comprehension through the Monitor and Clarify strategy, effective annotation and note-taking, and discussion and questioning techniques. Learning outcomes: • Understand the concept of high-yield literacy strategies and their importance in fostering student engagement and learning in the secondary classroom • Explore the Monitor and Clarify strategy and its role in improving reading comprehension and critical thinking skills among students • Learn and practice effective techniques for annotation and note-taking that promote active reading and enhance students’ comprehension • Develop an understanding of the Discussion and Questioning strategy as a means to promote student participation, critical thinking, and deeper comprehension of texts. Reflect on personal teaching practices and set goals for ongoing professional growth in fostering a fail-safe secondary classroom. Session 3: The Cultivated Classroom: High-Yield Literacy Strategies (Part 2) Building upon the foundational knowledge from Session 2, participants will explore a range of practical techniques and tools to enhance student learning outcomes. In this interactive session educators will delve into the art of effective summarization and learn how to engage students in the feedback process to foster a collaborative and reflective learning environment. Participants will discover the power of reciprocal teaching strategies to deepen students’ comprehension and critical thinking skills. The session culminates with a hands-on opportunity for participants to design and execute a lesson plan that seamlessly integrates a high-yield literacy strategy into their existing instructional practices. Through expert guidance and peer collaboration, educators will refine their approaches, ensuring a seamless fit within their unique classroom settings.
