Teacher- and Child-Managed Instruction
Students need access to a wide variety of texts to develop. But what happens when the text is too difficult for them to read independently? Our experts will work with you to master Laura Robb’s “staircase” for increasing rigor and text complexity as students mature into insightful readers who are familiar with a wide range of genres. We’ll also explore Robb’s approach to the gradual release framework for unlocking complex texts as a whole group, within small groups, and independently. Learning outcomes: • Define the three dimensions of text complexity: qualitative, quantitative, and reader and task • Determine how to level texts along the text complexity gradient • Explore how to provide students with the tools to thoughtfully engage with a range of increasingly demanding texts • Cultivate students’ ability to read complex texts independently
