Literacy Development

Helping students become healthy and productive super citizens begins by developing them as super readers—avid readers who consume texts with passion, understanding, and a critical eye. On the Super Reader Professional Learning Pathway , we work with educators to implement instructional practices that infuse social-emotional learning (SEL) into everyday literacy instruction to foster confident readers who thrive in a supportive and responsive classroom environment. Module 4 Showcasing Best Practices Learning outcomes: • Understand the connections between the 10 core principles of a super reader, the Seven Strengths, and literacy instruction • Analyze key components of effective super reader instruction • Create an action plan to continue to build super reader expertise Participants: Up to 30 We recommend splitting Grades K–5 teachers and coaches and Grades 6–8 teachers and coaches into separate groups. Ask us about in-person and remote options.

Module 1 Setting the Foundation: SEL Principles and an Introduction to the Seven Strengths Learning outcomes: • Understand the characteristics of a super reader • Implement the 10 principles of raising a super reader • Use the LitWheel to identify core components of a super reader lesson • Plan and teach a lesson that introduces the Seven Strengths • Use rubrics, checklists, and other resources to help students take

Module 3 Supporting SEL through Independence Learning outcomes: • Apply key takeaways from Module 2 • Use the LitWheel to foster a Seven Strengths–based independent reading community • Facilitate effective reading conferences and book discussions • Develop and lead mini-lessons that prepare students for independent reading • Inspire students to celebrate their reading growth as they become super readers

Whole- and Small- Group Instruction

Learning outcomes: • Apply key takeaways from Module 1 • Provide explicit and implicit instruction for social-emotional development during whole-class reading • Plan and teach a read- aloud that incorporates academic and social- emotional skills • Use instructional strategies to foster student discussion skills and peer feedback • Create a small-group action plan designed to support students’ academic and social- emotional development
